Ervin Tibbs was born under a fig tree at the tail-end of the great depression to migrant farm workers. He has picked cotton, built boats, worked as a roustabout, and served a hitch in U.S. Army intelligence, and is now a retired chemist who builds guitars and writes full time.
Jude and his friends are considered misfits by normal society; they live at the bottom of the economic and social scale and do so by choice. Although they are jobless and penniless, they take on an impossible task. Before sunset tomorrow they must raise enough money to buy a birthday present for a sick little boy. If they succeed, it will change their lives forever.
