E S Ramamurthy
A Master’s Degree Holder in Physics from Madras University, Ramamurthy had a distinguished career in Industry spanning more than 30 years. Towards the end, he had a high profile occupying senior positions as an expert in the field of renewable energy under Govt of India and UN Agencies. This brought him into contact with remote rural communities and their needs; sensitized to these conditions, he quit his career at its peak to involve himself in the socially productive cause of providing quality education for the deprived. After a careful study of the system and the field conditions, he started a program in ‘02 by the name of Sikshana. It is aimed at improving the standard of education in the public school system and in the process evolving a sustainable and replicable model through adoption of modern management concepts. Working from within the system and building on its strengths and circumventing its weaknesses, the program has been making significant progress since its inception. Sikshana covers presently about 500 schools with more than 50,000 kids in three States, making it one of the largest initiatives of its type in the country. The program received the prestigious Namma Bengaluru Award for 2010 for the best venture in the social sector.
Keeping in view the current Management trends, he relinquished operational control of the Sikshana Foundation to a band of young Professionals and is now functioning as its Chief Mentor. He is now actively engaged in developing new concepts and, in the process, extending the program to high schools. The feasibility of franchising Sikshana to organizations in other States is also being pursued by him vigorously. The aim is to take the program beyond the tipping point, so that it will be adopted as a viable option for the Public Education System on a wide scale. Sikshana, under his guidance and the contribution of the team working with him, is well on the way to making a mark at the national level in the near future.
