Fabienne Wolf

Biography

Fabienne Wolf grew up in Switzerland, which put paid to her early dreams of going to sea. She studied visual design, worked as a graphic designer in the Swiss advertising industry and taught art, language and a wide range of other subjects at Waldorf schools in England. A spontaneous decision to take time out, to travel and see the world put her in touch with her love of writing, and she realized her wish of crossing the great oceans at last. That change of course inspired her to write a series of Solo Travel Chronicles.

Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Switzerland. Please delete the snowy mountain peaks now shimmering before your internal eye, because my hometown is in the lowlands and the Alps only featured in family holidays (and of course in 'Heidi'). I was one of those child-bookworms, forever teased about always having my nose in a book, and I proudly claimed that I once read four books in a day. Well, it was in the summer holidays, the weather was wet and we had just been to the library for fresh supplies ...
No doubt this love for stories and the different styles used to express them rubbed off on my written work at school, for it was regularly read out to the class by enthusiastic teachers. Yet I never saw myself as a writer, studied the visual arts instead and became first a graphic designer and then an enthusiastic teacher myself.
When did you first start writing?
There were heaps of the usual early essays, letters and journals, but I did not feel the need to write for publication until I took time off to go travelling. Although I had packed art materials for sketching and painting, I discovered that I needed to express my views of the world in words rather than pictures, and that this was both satisfying and exhilarating in an entirely unfamiliar way.
