Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in rural Somerset County in Western PA. It was located in the middle of a farming community. I was surrounded by hills, woods, cows and fields of hay and corn. Life seemed pretty simple then and I believe my writing often reflects that ideal place and time.
When did you first start writing?
I still have my first rejection letter - from the 3rd grade! I wrote a poem and submitted it to Scholastic Magazine. I had hoped they would publish it, but they returned the poem saying that they didn't publish student's work. It really didn't upset me. As a matter of fact, I was thrilled to get a response from them!
