Ferida Durakovic

Biography

Ferida Durakovic graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo. Her first collection of poems, Bal po maskama (After the Masquerade Ball), was published in 1977, and earned the Literary Youth of Bosnia and Herzegovina Award, as well as the Svjetlost Publishing House Award, which is given for the best first book by a young author.
Her published titles include books of poetry – Mala nocna svjetiljka (Little Night Light); Oci koje me gledaju (Eyes that are Watching Me); Srce tame (The Heart of Darkness); Locus minoris – sklonost Bosni kao melanholiji (Locus minoris – Inclined to Bosnia as to Melancholy) ; Kao kisa u japanskim filmovima (Like Rain in Japanese Movies) ; and Pokret otpora (Resistance), a collection of columns and essays. Durakovic also writes for children, with titles that include Jos jedna bajka o ruzi (Yet Another Fairy Tale about a Rose), Mikijeva abeceda (Miki’s Alphabet), Amilina abeceda (Amila’s Alphabet), Vjetrov prijatelj (The Wind’s Friend), Ezopove basne (Aesop’s Fables), and Mrak cudak (A Weird Dark).
Books of Durakovic’s selected poems have been published in Bulgaria, Italy and the United States. She received the Fund for Free Expression Award USA in 1993; the Vasyl-Stus Freedom-to-Write Award in 1999; the BiH Radio1 Award for the best radio play in 2015; and the Best Story Award at the Copicevim stazama djetinjstva (Following Copic’s Childhood Path) manifestation in 2018.
Durakovic has worked as a teacher of her native language, an editor, and a language editor, and held the position of executive director of the PEN Centre in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 until her early retirement in 2013.
She lives with her husband, daughter, and three cats in Sarajevo.
