AR Fiano

AR Fiano is a New York-based author and teacher. Identifying as bisexual and genderqueer, AR is a strong LGBT advocate, particularly for youth. AR grew up in poverty, dropped out of school and was sometimes homeless. AR has worked in civil rights advocacy and taught philosophy, law, and eastern religions. AR is available for readings and public speaking.

AR created the Gabriel's World Mystery/Thriller/LGBT series, under the idea of, It's Time for New Heroes. The series has three books--The Hanged Man, Two-Faced Woman, and The Book of Joel.

Gabriel Ross is the main character in the series. Gabriel is a brilliant and intuitive private investigator in his thirties, a strong and compassionate advocate with his clients. He is Buddhist, intellectual, strong-minded, and skilled in boxing and Baguazhang. The other main character is Joel McFadden, a bisexual artist, Gabriel's boyfriend. The stories involve Gabriel's dangerous cases and Gabriel and Joel's relationship.

Gabriel's World offers a compelling community of characters, in stories that explore the extremes and complexity of good and evil. The stories feature strong LGBT characters and mature, adult themes.

Smashwords Interview

What motivated you to become an indie author?
Years of trying to publish through traditional means. I had some vague favorable responses but no one wanted to take a chance on the series, especially as publishers began to disappear (in particular LGBT publishers). With the advent of channels like Smashwords, I realized I could try another way. I could take on the design and editing aspects myself, and learn about marketing. Most of all, I could ensure that my characters and stories stay true to my vision, rather than be altered for a different agenda. This series is more than just a set of books, and I'm good with the stories and characters standing or falling on their own. The response I've had has been incredible--when people just get it, and get into Gabriel's World. I made the right decision.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Both in providing an outlet to different retailers to carry and sell the book, and also in providing really good advice on marketing and preparation of materials.
