Sarah WaterRaven has written a fine and amazing novel that creates a wondrous world of fantasy that is enmeshed in the real world much as JK Rowling juxtaposes the muggle world with the world of magic in her Potter books. It deserves to be in the company of fantastic and fantastical books as Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell if nothing else than for it's placement of magic in the everyday, much like Alan Moore, the great graphic novel writer, created Top Ten and it's police force in a city of heroes. I loved the premise of a detective dealing with the world of fantasy. It's so rich in potential and the pacing is inviting and none too heavy. Now, if I saw Neil Gaiman walking down the street, I would run up to him and tell him, "you MUST read this!"
A fantastic and fantastical read that sublimely ushers the reader into a world of crime mystery juxtaposed with high fantasy. It recalls to mind the visionary Mike Mignola's Hellboy graphic novel series and now films, simply from its awesome premise! In additon to a review on barnes and noble placing it in the company of JK Rowling's Harry Potter, legendary writer Alan Moore's Top Ten, and Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell written in clear prose and wonderful pace, and you have Detective Docherty and the Demon's Tears. Read it and you will believe
