Elsie Johnstone was a primary school teacher and special education specialist, and over the years also worked as an office cleaner in London, kitchen hand, shop assistant, waitress, photographer, Avon sales representative and betting shop clerk. Working as a wordsmith’s assistant encouraged her to develop her writing skills. Her first book was “Our Little Town”, a snapshot of life in the Victorian fishing village of Lakes Entrance across four generations and she is now working on “Ma’s Garden”, a novel based on the family and events surrounding the first year of publication, in 1902, of a local newspaper in the small Victorian town of Trafalgar.
Graeme Johnstone had a successful career as a journalist, including working for Australia’s biggest selling newspaper, “The Herald Sun”. He wrote its daily column, “A Place In the Sun”, catching the vibe of Melbourne and entertaining 1.3 million readers. Later he and Elsie established The Wordsmith’s Shop, writing material for a variety of clients. His first novel, “The Playmakers”, was based on the premise that William Shakespeare did not write the plays ascribed to him. He has written musicals including “Fugly”, a contemporary take on the Cyrano de Bergerac tale, and “Normie”, based on the 1960s experience of Australia’s King of Pop, Normie Rowe, which will premiere in 2012.
Graeme and Elsie lived in Ireland for a year researching and working on “Lover, Husband, Father, Monster”, outlining the degeneration and collapse of a contemporary marriage. It is told in two voices, with Elsie writing the wife’s story and Graeme contributing the husband’s view, and is available in two books on Smashwords.
