Hampton B. has worked in broadcasting as an award-winning writer, producer, and announcer; and in marketing/communications as a freelance writer. He is currently a wandering and wondering ecclesiastic in western Canada. Segue is his first novel.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on a farm in western Canada, and spent hours listening to the radio and messing around with tape recorders. But I never thought I'd be "that guy on the radio" until college, when I discovered that being "on air" was exhilarating. While working as an "on-air personality" (the fancy name for DJ), I accidentally discovered an ability for "writing for sound" and creating what radio people call "the theatre of the mind." I had a lot of fun working in radio, and I still miss the energy and creativity of a "motivated" radio station.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love it when it feels like there is an angel on my shoulder, giving me the words that will evoke an emotion, a memory, or an indelible picture in the mind of a person I have never met.
