How do you approach cover design?
It seems like when I get to the halfway point in writing the image comes to me. With Bright, I began looking for fonts that would split the sky like a cloud layer. I was psyched when I found the perfect one. I wanted a city at the bottom and so I began making layers and playing around with them. I'm not a graphic designer. I have to teach myself as I go along, but I really love being the creator of the look.
With my next book Fly, I want the leg of a girl in flight. The other day I was in the thrift shop and found a dress that was a perfect shade of blue for the background. Luckily it was only $3 so I bought it and keep it for inspiration.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
First, I must say that my favorite books are always the one I read most recently. So my answers are with all due respect to Jane Austen, who I read and loved way way back.
All of my favorite books have protagonists that are way in over their heads, or are in a situation for which they are untrained, and probably incapable and yet, they somehow rise above.
The last book I read was Wool, by Hugh Howey
before that I read Wild, by Cheryl Strayed and The Dirty Life by Kristen Kimball both are memoir.
I loved the Hunger Games series. My daughter loved them and my mother loved them.
I'm reading the Little House on the Prairie series to the littles. Pa Ingalls is absolutely in over his head.
