H.D. Knightley

Biography

H.D.Knightley lives in Los Angeles. She’s the mother of four children and is married to the surfer boy she fell in love with when she was a teenager. She is not a farmer, has never demolished a home, no longer has compost worms (they came to a bad end while she wrote this book) and most nights she can’t see the stars.
She dreams a lot about walking through fields holding hands with her guy under an endlessly magical and mysterious sky. She absolutely agrees with William that sitting around a fire pit with friends is the best thing in the world and she is a true believer in the fine art of wishful thinking. She also unequivocally feels the best heroes are the ones that are completely in over their head at least some of the time.

Smashwords Interview

How do you approach cover design?
It seems like when I get to the halfway point in writing the image comes to me. With Bright, I began looking for fonts that would split the sky like a cloud layer. I was psyched when I found the perfect one. I wanted a city at the bottom and so I began making layers and playing around with them. I'm not a graphic designer. I have to teach myself as I go along, but I really love being the creator of the look.
With my next book Fly, I want the leg of a girl in flight. The other day I was in the thrift shop and found a dress that was a perfect shade of blue for the background. Luckily it was only $3 so I bought it and keep it for inspiration.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
First, I must say that my favorite books are always the one I read most recently. So my answers are with all due respect to Jane Austen, who I read and loved way way back.

All of my favorite books have protagonists that are way in over their heads, or are in a situation for which they are untrained, and probably incapable and yet, they somehow rise above.
The last book I read was Wool, by Hugh Howey
before that I read Wild, by Cheryl Strayed and The Dirty Life by Kristen Kimball both are memoir.
I loved the Hunger Games series. My daughter loved them and my mother loved them.
I'm reading the Little House on the Prairie series to the littles. Pa Ingalls is absolutely in over his head.
