Hester studied Modern Greek and French at Exeter College, Oxford. She spent a year in Thessaloniki aged 21. She is the mother of four: Chloe (20), Tabby (18), Alfie (15) and Bash (13). She lives with the younger two and husband Fred in Bishops Stortford. She self-published a black comedy about a human milk factory, called A Breast of the Times, in 2007. In 2012 she was diagnosed with breast cancer and started a blog as therapy: The Breast Blog in the World. She started serialising The World According to Shardonnay, on the blog, two chapters at a time, on the 31st of January, 2013. Now she is half-way through the sequel but has the feeling it is turning into a series as Shardonnay has a lot to say.
