Where did you grow up and how did this influence your writing?
I went to a boarding school in the Isle of Man (a self governing island half way between England and Ireland). It was a very sports orientated school and skill at rugby or cricket counted for more than any sort of literary composition, so my interest in writing was a fairly solitary vice.
I first realised that I could string together enough words to tell a story when one of the teachers ceremonially ripped up a story of mine in front of the whole sniggering class, dumping the remains in his waste bin and saying that if he ever again caught me trying to pass off professional writing as my own then I would be in serious trouble.
I remember silently staring at him and thinking what a complete pillock he was: the story was all my own work and hadn't been copied from anywhere. However, I was so pleased with this confirmation of my ability that I didn't bother to argue.
What is your writing process?
I lie awake in the middle of the night, thinking - how about if he did this? Or maybe it would be more likely that she would do that? Then I scribble notes, half of which I can't read the next morning, and even some of the ones I can read are rubbish. But there's usually enough to start me thinking productively the next afternoon when I sit down in the study to do the actual writing.
