Born and raised in what I call the "overly prideful state of Texas", I developed a desire to be outside of the norm at a young age. As a child I was drawn to heavy metal and progressive rock, so it wasn't long before I was playing drums in various bands that were highly influenced by groups like Black Sabbath, Lamb of God, Dream Theater, Rush, Tool, and Mastodon.
Around the same time, bored with the way most fiction read, I reached out and found writers like Clive Barker and Mark Z Danielewski who seemed to be pushing the boundaries of what fiction could really do.
It is because if these writers (just to name two) and indie musicians like Karnivool, Dead Letter Circus, and Tech N9ne, that I write mind-bending multi-layered novels that have a hard time falling into any one genre. I embrace the diverse and refuse to be held down by the usual conventions of society.

William (Too Dark To See Prequel)
by Jay Chastain
William, a nine year old, sees shadows move. For as long as he can remember, the darkest parts of the room ripple as if they are curtains hiding something menacing.
His mom helps them go away.
But when his parents fight, and his mom disappears, the shadows are the only things he can turn to for help.
WILLIAM is a prequel short story to the novel, Too Dark To See.
