JD Lovil

Publisher info

JD Lovil was born in the small Town (population 795) of Lockesburg in the southwestern Arkansas, in the year of 1957. That was the year of the first canine cosmonaut. Enjoying early life as Farm Hand, Assistant or Slave, he learned just enough about hand labor, mechanics, metalwork, plumbing and electrical work to be dangerous, and far more than he ever wanted to know about many other unpleasant tasks. Enduring the slings and arrows that is childhood, he eventually entered into University life, where he dabbled in biology, Physics and Computer Science before settling on a major in Chemistry. Surviving many fine adventures over the years, and after having been rumored to be an agent for the Arcturian anti-movement movement, the Author has settled into the Phoenix Metro Area in Arizona, where he hopes to avoid life's complications.

Smashwords Interview

What's the story behind your latest book?
The latest book that I have published on Smashwords is 'Vanguard of Man'. It is a story about an Earth which has suffered a few of the more probable world-wide disasters (Financial collapse, Totalitarian governments, volcanic eruptions causing the return of the ice age) with the loss of most of the supple lines needed to survive.
In the story, the last scientific community designs and develops the tech for generational colony spacecraft to transport the survivors to other star systems. The Vanguard are modified human crew for those ships. Strong, super-intelligent and hard to kill, they are perfect for the job, but are they still human?
This Earth is one of many possible Earths that I will address in related books, each one existing in one of the many universes predicted by the Many Worlds Theory.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I had considered writing for many years. In fact, I had written various short stories and poetry over the years, but had never published, due to the many obstacles that one faces in the traditional publication process.
A couple of years ago, I discovered that the Indie publication process presented by such institutions as Smashwords and Amazon made the process realistic now, and proceeded to publish my little heart out.
As to what motivated me to become an indie author, I think that I must give the common answer. I write because I must. There are truths that each of us possess, and which we discover to our shock other people do not know. Like most writers, I want to give a gift of unique knowledge to my readers. Indie publication makes that possible.

Smashwords book reviews by JD Lovil

  • Shines Before You - Episode 1 - Not the Bad Guys on June 05, 2015

It is an Entertaining book. I just finished reading the epub format of this book, and it blew me away! I usually like to explain both the good and the bad in my reviews, and I will try to do so here. You will pardon me if I have to fish for the bad a bit on this one. I found the way the characters fit into the described world enjoyable. Juan is a detective, and he feels like a detective. The world he lives in has autonomous cars that can follow directions to meet you at your front door, but Juan takes it for granted, like any real person living in that world. This is a good story, with something for everyone in it. This storyline has everything, from underage prostitutes to lawyers, big business managers and both contract and municipal police. This is a world where the infrastructure of society is falling apart, and big business is picking at the carcass of society for the tasty bits. The Author makes this extraordinary world seem normal. That is magic, people! One of the things I am confused about is the pay structure of the major corporations. All of the biggies have a cradle to grave employee package, with a percentage of disposable income built into the package. I still cannot tell whether the Author admired or was disgusted with that sort of business-employee relationship. My major quibbles with the book were minor ones. I could not distinguish a paragraph separation that was different from the sentence separation back when I read the Kindle version, so it was sometimes slightly confusing to decide where the paragraphs began and ended, since there also were no indentations. This made some of the transitions in the book slightly confusing. Only slightly, though. It looks much better in epub. I have seen more typos, grammar errors and dropped words in most professionally edited books than I found in this one, so the Reader can concentrate on the reading without distraction. The way the book ended was a little jarring, but it is a great setup for continuation in the next book. This was an interesting and stimulating book, and I recommend it as your next read. I challenge you to define what genre it belongs in!
