Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town in Georgia during the 50's & 60's. It was simple and easy, yet all of life unfolded in each day. My senses were enriched with the smell of chicken frying in the kitchen, the beauty of blossoms dangling from tall magnolia trees, the touch of a slithering salamander in the palm of my hand, the sound of creek water splashing against the rocks! All of this is in my soul! How could I not write about this?
When did you first start writing?
I started looking at my surroundings with intense eyes from a very early age. Although I did not actually start writing until much later in my life, I had the visions in my mind & often could see them on the page. I do, however, remember in the third grade writing a short essay for class homework. Much to my dismay, my teacher thought my words were too flowery! I have never forgotten that word, flowery! Now that I think about it, I suppose sometimes my descriptions are still a bit flowery. Funny, but it feels much better to say that now than when I was eight years old.
