Smashwords Interview

Describe your desk
My "desk" is the far right table at Gregory's Coffee Shop on 44th Street in New York City. I am there every weekday morning at 6:30am, typing away on my latest novel or play or short story. At my side is a large red-eye coffee (regular drip coffee with a shot of espresso!) and an apple fritter (the staff o' life).
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Born and raised in a small(ish) town in southwest Oklahoma I wanted nothing more than to "get out" and move to the big city! I did just that at 19 and haven't been back since (some 30 years now). When I started to take my writing seriously at the age of 40 or so, I was astonished to find Oklahoma - its atmosphere, its mentality, its legacy - cropping up in my characters, in my settings, in every aspect of my stories. So much so that my first book, The Summer of Jenny Wade, is set in Oklahoma, as is my first play, Stillwater! What's that old adage: you can take the boy out of Oklahoma but you can't take Oklahoma out of the boy? So very true, apparently!
