I live in a little hobbit hole at the bottom of a steep hill. It would be the perfect place to float down if I had a large enough umbrella. If I floated too far I'd land in the ocean and that would be just fine on a hot day.
The Twirlybirch family first showed up in Saudi Arabia while I was spending a few hot and dusty years in Jeddah. I plan to continue telling Twirlybirch tales since it seems like a worthwhile pastime. Beauregard and Sparkle Snowflake deserve to have their stories told and I'm the only one who knows them.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
My earliest years were in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. My family moved to Denver, Colorado while I was in elementary school. We all loved our lives there in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains. My adult life was a long list of moves. I've enjoyed working in Colorado, Texas, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, northern BC, Vancouver Island, Pender Island, South Korea, and now Powell River, BC. In 'Twirlybirch Takes Off' the main characters are looking for a new home where they can be happy and safe. They take after me in that respect.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
As an elementary school teacher one of the most enjoyable parts was reading aloud to young students. While teaching Year 3 boys and girls at the British International School in Jeddah, I began writing Twirlybirch stories to share in the classroom. Just like playing guitar in front of people, it took time to get comfortable. Fortunately for me the kids were supportive and enjoyed listening to both my stories and my guitar.
In the fifth episode of the Twirlybirch e-books, Beauregard has a variety of problems erupting at school. This time around he manages to find difficulties with the number one class dingbat, and even more unrest and embarrassment with another classmate. Then, on a fishing trip, Beauregard and his Pedal Powered Umbrella are called upon in an emergency. It's time to Hop To It, Beauregard Twirlybirch!
Beauregard is happy to show his Pedal-Powered-Umbrella to the father of his new friend, Fatima. Then he and his parents learn it involves a trip to Saudi Arabia. After some convincing, his parents allow Beauregard to travel with Fatima to the Middle East. On their way, a stop in Amsterdam leads to a chase that could land Beauregard in danger. Then in Saudi, it's thieves of a different collar!
In the 3rd entry of the Twirlybirch series, Beauregard Twirlybirch reads about a man-powered flight named the Gossamer Condor that happened in 1977. Borrowing from that idea, he takes one of his floating umbrellas and decides to give it a propeller. What wild and crazy adventure will he manage to fall into with his new PPU, his Pedal Powered Umbrella?
When Beauregard and Sparkle Snowflake Twirlybirch find themselves on their own, they take matters into their own hands. The two little runaways sneak away from the Police and head for adventure. Together they face all kinds of overwhelming problems including a long lost auntie who just happens to own the house they sneak into. When their auntie turns out to be a robber it's time to go.
