Smashwords Interview

What motivated you to become an indie author?
The decision to start off as an indie author came after carefully weighing the options between traditional and self-publishing. The pros of self-publishing are that you keep the full control of the publishing process, have direct influence on the time factor (you can publish a book within minutes and at any point in time), and the option of higher earnings. The cons are the initial obscurity as a writer, low exposure to the public, and the hurdle of having to do everything yourself. The first book I decided to publish was my song book 'New World – Songs Of Love And Spirit – Complete Works (1989-2011).' I knew it was difficult to find a publisher for poetry, therefore I decided to publish 'New World' myself. I design all my book covers, interiors, and I do all the marketing and distribution.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first novel I read was 'The Color Purple' by Alice Walker. It had a profound effect on me. The story is about an African-American girl who grows up poor with no prospects of getting a better life. She’s forced to marry early, is discriminated because of the color of her skin, poverty and lack of education. She leads a joyless life with a husband who beats her. As she’s coming of age, she gathers strength to rebel against the living conditions oppressing her. When she finds her inner strength and pride, she discovers her way to happiness. I loved the happy end of the story, and the simplicity in Walker’s style. And I loved the movie with Whoopi Goldberg, my then favorite actor. I was twelve years old when I read the 'The Color Purple' for the first time. Ever since then I’ve been in love with the optimistic view of life American writers in particular have. It’s as if they’re saying: "no matter how bad it is, get yourself up and kick it!"
