Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Queens, New York. It's probably influenced my writing by providing such a distinctive environment for my formative years. It's supposedly the most ethnically diverse area in the world. Then you've also got Manhattan so close by- a sort of cultural Mecca for the artsy kids. One can't help but encounter many different types of individuals with different backgrounds and stories. I think that changed how I view fiction and characters- understanding the various factors that make up an individual and how they are a composite of history, tradition, social positions and individual psychology.
When did you first start writing?
It was suggested to me by my cousin on my seventeenth birthday. I was looking for an artistic outlet and he offered up writing. It appealed to me because I could start immediately. It didn't require purchasing, say, a guitar or paint supplies. Instead I picked up a poetry anthology and got to reading and writing that day.
