Jonathan Nichols

I am 33 years old and have always loved writing so being a professional author is a dream I've had since I was a kid. Elemental Touch is my first book, and I've been working on it since 2010. I've already discussed some of my influences in my interview section but specifically for this book I was definitely influenced by sci-fi and fantasy movies that stepped outside of the box like Krull and Willow. I love it when a story crosses genres like the fantasy aspects of Star Wars or the sci-fi elements of Krull. When I wrote this I set out to create a modern fantasy story that would inspire people to look at the world and history differently, similar to what Dan Brown did with The Davinci Code, but at the same time I wanted the story to be action-packed and just fun to read and not so huge that the idea of reading it seems like a daunting task. For instance, I started reading Moby Dick in high school and I loved it, but to this day I've never finished it cause it's just so long. That's why I'm planning this book as a series so that instead of one huge book, or in the case of most series today SEVERAL huge books, you get several small books that feel more like episodes in a tv series. I am already working on the next book and I am really looking forward to hearing what my readers think about Elemental Touch,

What is your writing process?
To me, writing is more of a process of discovery than creation. I don't like outlining because I think it limits spontaneity. Several times during writing sessions I would finish a chapter and be like, "Wow, I didn't see that coming." On the flip side sometimes I would try really hard to include something and the section just wouldn't work until I took it out and tried something else, as if the book already existed and it was telling me "You're doing it wrong."
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I don't know about the first story but in sixth grade I discovered the work of Edgar Allen Poe and was instantly hooked. I remember reading The Masque of the Red Death and just being blown away by the imagery and the twist ending. The Pit and the Pendulum gave me a real sense of pain, claustrophobia and despair and showed me how a story can really transport you somewhere and even if it's a place you wouldn't ever want to be, like a torture chamber, as long as you care about the characters in the story you will stick with them.
