Yassin Hall

She comes from humble beginnings that would make most people throw in the towel, but her journey is one that demonstrates how important perseverance and determination are to reaching one’s destiny. She’s a mother, dance mom, fashionista, model manager, entrepreneur, life mentor, speaker and now Author. She is Yassin Hall, a U.S. Virgin Islander with roots on St. Thomas and St. John. However, Hall’s true passion has always been tied to fashion and clothing, as she began modeling in her teen years and designing.

From the age of twelve, she was raised by her maternal grandmother and paternal uncle after her mother suffered a mental breakdown in front of her. It was a day that changed her life forever. She wants her story as a child living with a mother with mental illness to raise awareness and help others. Mental illness in many communities is taboo & unspoken. She feels that cycle should be broken so others suffering with depression, anxiety, and mental disorders can be made aware of their conditions and know that it is okay to receive help before going over the edge.

Smashwords Interview

What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
In January, I launched my book tour in my hometown the United States Virgin Islands and word of mouth as well as using all the media outlets to promote all 9 of my book signings made the tour a huge success. Since my return Facebook in which I have over 2000 friends has been very effective. I did a 5 day free kindle promotion on Amazon and rated #1 in the following categories: Memoir, Teen & Youth Biography, Motivational and Self Help. In April I am planning another book signing in Orlando, where I reside.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on St. Thomas in the United States Virgin Islands. The 1st book in the series Journey Untold setting is in the Virgin Islands and is a huge influence in writing this book. Twisted Love, my memoir of living with my mother who suffered with depression. To this day the stigma of mental illness and that topic is still a taboo. Many go untreated just like my mother did, writing this book is my way of leading my community to healing and bringing awareness to this very serious issue in communities of color. Because of the shame and not being aware of the signs of depression, her condition escalated to schizophrenia. I feel that cycle should be broken so others suffering with depression, anxiety, and mental disorders can be made aware of their conditions and know that it is okay to receive help before going over the edge.

The stigma is still in their islands and those suffering continue to suffer in silence and the kids affected still do not have in school mental health counselors. I am fighting for my community and encouraging everyone to get help they need.

My memoir as a child living in the United States Virgin Islands with my mentally ill mother who suffered with schizophrenia. At the age of 12, my mother suffered a nervous breakdown right in front of me and almost near death by her hands. The day that changed my life forever. I am using my 100% unapologetic words of a silent story deep inside of me never spoken until now. My hope to save lives.
