Chris Hargreaves

Biography

I am a solicitor at a large law firm in Brisbane, Australia. I work primarily in commercial litigation, although I have experience in a wider range of areas.

I get a lot out of trying to assist others in the professional development, and I find this to be a rewarding use of my time. Generally my existing (and intended) books are focused on that goal, in the hope that some of my personal experiences will assist those who come after me.

Smashwords Interview

When did you first start writing?
In a sense my writing "career" has only just begun. However as a lawyer I have been communicating with people through speech and on paper for over a decade now. Writing a book is very different from providing a legal opinion, but hopefully the skills I have learned in communicating through my career have been put to good use in my role as an author.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I wrote Look Before you Leap because I wanted to offer some real world guidance to young people looking at, or embarking on, a career in law. Legal texts are notoriously expensive, so I also wanted to price something at the lower end of the scale where young people could easily access the book, purchase it with their own money and get it on a platform that best suited them.

So far as the book itself goes, I have found in my own professional development that my knowledge has developed through people willing to invest time and effort in me, by sharing knowledge and wisdom with me. This book is my attempt to do the same thing on a broader scale. As well as the book I do my best to spend face to face time with junior lawyers and deliberately seek to give them the benefit of my experience. Hopefully they get something positive out of that, although sometimes I'm sure that they are secretly rolling their eyes at me....
