Smashwords Interview

What's the story behind your latest book?
'The Old Dog and the Doorstep', which fills a gap in time between 'Home Economics for Girls' and the upcoming 'Mystery of the Expanding Waistband', is a sideways glance at life in the village of Hapeney Fen. We witness the end-of-season baking contest through Kitty Tickham's unique perspective, and uncover hints about a scandalous episode in the family's past.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have stories I need to tell, and I am stubborn in my belief that good writing will find an audience. Via this route, I can speak to them, wherever they are in the world.

Two useful sets of notes bound up together here - a quick zip through common errors, and then a collection of useful hints and prompts regarding structure and the logistics of writing. Having suffered a comprehensive school education, I rely in the main on my sense of language, developed over years of reading well-written English, to inform my writing. Inevitably, mistakes creep in. How much better to have a clear source to turn to in case of doubt. There are many, but this one brings extra value for its no-nonsense tone and its focus on the toiling wannabee author sitting alone in front a screen somewhere, in need of stern guidance. Not for snowflakes: "this is unacceptable .. this vile practice .. this will make you go blind .. you should be shot ..." And quite right too. Even if you are sure your grammar is flawless (it isn't), there is something for you here. I found the advice on not wasting the reader's energy on 'sequencing glitches' enlightening. As collection of blog posts, there is some overlap between articles, but then points about intransitive laying about and punctuation within quotes bear repeating. I'm off to check my metaphorical underwear is clean, and then get back to some careful writing.

This is easy to get into, and engaging to the end. I may have missed something, not having read the previous instalment (I shall have to, if only to discover what the acronym 'T.W.A.T.' means), but my ignorance did not impede my enjoyment. There is nothing too scary here, though the tension builds nicely to keep us invested. It is mostly good clean fun, though some prissier readers might not fall in love with Lizzie Jackson - she'll be no problem for aussies, brits or irish readers, but the puritans might flinch at her earthy vocab. I'd be happy to hear more from her, and there are other background characters whom one senses are living full lives outside our view; and the animal characters are clearly defined. Further or fuller explorations of this bucolic setting would be welcomed.
