The Naked Dame
on July 17, 2011
Mr. Bovberg's The Naked Dame is a sexy, smart pulp noir treat that keeps you turning the pages until its tight -- but not too neat -- ending. It's a nice combination of crime noir byzantineness and plot coherence that holds together better than you think it is going to halfway through. It's the right combination of tribute and nostalgia, with a modern twist, and the descriptions of Los Angeles in the '50s seem credible. The writing is sophisticated without hitting you over the head with MFA over-floweriness, and the characters and interesting and believable. A recommended read.
