Karen S. Bell

Walking with Elephants was Karen Bell’s first novel, although she is not new to writing. After earning a graduate degree in mass communication she spent 15 years as an editor and writer of business materials. She says, “Inspiration for this novel came from my direct contact with the joys of Corporate America and the balancing act that comes with being a working mother.”

With her second novel, Sunspots, she continues to be in awe of the magical and wondrous phenomenon called life. As an observer and obvious participant in feminine values and approach to our human challenges, she brings this perspective to her work. Fascinated by the mysteries of the unseen forces that perhaps play a role in guiding our choices, she searches for answers in the mundane as well as in the cosmic forces that surround us.

She is working on her third novel and lives in Ponte Vedra, Fl. with her husband and their two furry kids.

Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Brooklyn and loved to go to the local public library and take out a stack of books, the maximum allowed. Then I would read them avidly getting them back before their due date. I devoured them. All kinds of books, biographies, autobiographies, mysteries, historical fiction. You name it. I have continued that pastime into my adulthood. Always with a book. The more you read, the better your write.
When did you first start writing?
I always had a penchant for writing but not the discipline to keep at it. I took a writing class as an adult and wrote a short story, The companion. The teacher said, picture a naked lightbulb hanging from the ceiling and...go. The story wrote it itself and it was nothing about lightbulbs, but about friendship and heart break losing a loved one. I wasn't sure where to set it but after a vacation to Alaska, the setting was a no brainer. I was hooked. But it took several years to attempt my first novel.
