This story is quite gruesome, so I would not read it to small sensitive children. However, I used to organize Halloween parties in my cottage in the woods for older kids, and I can imagine that this story would fit in perfectly. Most children are too wild on such occasions and would not listen to anything longer. The length of this ebook seems just optimal for these purposes. Many children love gory stories such as this one and I don’t see anything wrong with that. It’s just a harmless Halloween fantasy. What I find really intriguing about this story is that it combines several elements in a very unusual way. First of all, it’s about a 12-year-old boy, so I sort of expected some sort of a happy ending and was surprised not to find it. Second, Bob tells Peter to to be careful with the knife because he does not want his son to chop off his fingers -- and something much worse happens later, even though the boy is careful and does not disobey in any way. The cause of the whole tragedy is Peter’s gory imagination. The scary things he creates for fun come to life to haunt him and to destroy him and his close ones. In this sense the story is much deeper than it may seem at first sight. Does it not happen to all of us that our dark games sometimes get out of our hands? Aren’t our own fantasies more powerful than we sometimes? Don’t creatures try to take revenge on their Creator more often than we care to admit?
