Kat Smutz

Biography

Kat Smutz has been researching history since her college days. As a technology major at Southwest Missouri State University, she visited a Civil War battlefield park and recalled her father’s stories about her great grandfather, a cavalryman in the Confederate Army. Kat signed up for the park’s volunteer program and she’s been a history addict ever since.

Over the years, Kat has worked with reenactment groups, history oriented organizations and historic sites on county, state, and federal levels. Her most extensive studies have been about the everyday life of people in the United States during the Victorian era. But no matter what the time or the place, if it’s history, you have Kat’s attention. Life has taken her traveling across most of the United States and into Canada and Mexico on occasion. She and husband Mark also spent three weeks wandering about England and Scotland in search of her family roots—and found them.

Professionally, Kat has worked in law enforcement, as a teacher, and was a freelance journalist for twenty years. All of those experiences lend themselves well to her work for History In An Hour.
