Kay Hemlock Brown

Kay Brown grew up in Western Pennsylvania, and is currently a part-time instructor at a small university in the northeast. She has been writing since she was in high school, and loves classical music, ballet, gymnastics, figure skating, the martial arts, tennis, and science fiction. (To be honest, she is an indifferent performer in any of these areas.)

The picture isn't Kay. She is also paranoid about her privacy, which makes it very difficult to get to know her.

She also likes dogs, cats and birds, and hates spiders. She hasn't quite made up her mind about rabbits. All that stupidity looks like an act to her. Kay has been adopted by a Beagle cross (who belongs to a friend), and she has become a slave to this doggie. Okay, that's enough information for the present.

Smashwords Interview

What's the story behind your latest book?
"Helen's Eventful Summer" has been uploaded, and goes online tomorrow (Saturday). This is a very fast-paced chunk of the Helen story, shortly before she has a massive tumor removed from her brain, resulting in almost total amnesia.

For various reasons, the action in this book rotates between several interrelated threads very quickly, and we see some important characters develop in unexpected ways as we watch. Helen makes friends with several interesting women, but she remains strongly attached to Marissa Brooks, one of the siblings she meets in "Sweet Hurricane". There is a lot of sex, I'm embarrassed to say; I don't like how much of it goes into these books when I write them, and even less how hard it is to take it out once it's in.

There are several lovely characters in this story, and you should read it! Apart from anything else, I would dearly love to know that people like the stories enough to actually buy them.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I did NOT set out to be an author. I took up writing at a time when I was very much alone, simply because I was at home in a remote part of the country, and I was beginning to become a bit of a recluse. I just wanted to create a bunch of friends with whom I could associate, who shared most of my values, and who would go out and do the things I wanted to do, but was too much of a coward to follow through on! None of my characters are authors, as you will see, so an author was not something I wanted to be.

Quite by accident, one of my older friends discovered the manuscript of Alexandra, and I was "outed", as they say. His praise was so enthusiastic, I began to see myself as a writer for the first time. I was persuaded to share portions of the book with his daughter, and ... well, that should be enough of an answer!
