Reviewed by Dr. Dan Whitaker Dr. Kerry Bunn has written out of both the anguish and the faith that a serious illness has triggered. The pages sparkle with his wit and good humor, his positive temperament, and a winsome, straight-forward style. He combines precise medical descriptions of his neuropathy with his own emotional and spiritual responses to what he calls his body's betrayal. Dr. Bunn meets his illness head-on with a determination to know as best he can its nature. He gives thorough and precise description of his symptoms, which allows a genuine collaboration with his physicians. A refreshing honesty about the feelings that attend his crisis make this book valuable to all who pass through the valley of suffering. He writes of the assaults on pride made by feelings of weakness, vulnerability, depression, and at one point, suicidal thoughts. He faces up to the reality of death and anger in all of our lives. His deep faith does not require dishonesty about real feelings. Kerry describes key spiritual issues raised by serious sickness, and shares the insights he discovers in Scripture and Christian faith. The problem of suffering has long been noted as the supreme stumbling-block to belief in a good God who has all power. All efforts to affirm Christian faith in the face of suffering and evil must grapple with the issues he raises. Kerry avoids ponderous, professional theology in favor of theological language that is accessible to laymen. There is a recurrent Latin phrase in the book: Soli Deo Gloria: To God alone the glory. Dr. Bunn's sensitive, humble faith in sharing his journey has guaranteed that the lofty aspiration of that phrase has been overwhelmingly achieved. I hope you will read it.
