Smashwords Interview

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The story coming together as I write is a joy for me. I have an outline of how the story should go, but the details fill in as the story progresses. I am sometimes surprised by the turn of events or what the characters say, but going back and reading a section after I have it down and smoothed out is a pleasure for me.
What is your writing process?
Usually some idea occurs to me - a "What if?" - and I get a sense of a beginning and an end. Then I sit down to fill in the middle in outline form. The story sort of builds itself but I always sit down with a direction in mind and I don't sit down unless I have at least some idea of where I want the story to go. I try to have the whole story outlined before I start filling it in. I have learned that a more detailed outline will help me in that I have fewer rewrites but I still do lots of rewriting. I often get part way through a story and find that the story has taken a turn and isn't leading where I need it to go. At that point, I either let the story change or rewrite so that I am back on my original track. I have a very hard time sitting down for more than an hour or two - I have to get up and do something - so I write in spurts. Often my spurt is just rereading what I wrote the day before and rewriting it - usually just smoothing it out. By the time I get to the end of my story, I usually have reviewed it enough that it makes sense and just needs editing, not rewriting.
