Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in Hawaii but raised in upstate New York. We did a lot of moving around so I rarely had more than a few years in one place. There were always new people and places and people watching became a sort of hobby; trying to figure out what people in a new place were like so that I could hopefully fit in. I generally didn't fit in, in spite of the people watching but it helped me to create characters in my head, to really flesh them out as full personalities. Thanks to the places we lived, I got to experience people from a great many places, nationalities and oh the accents! So much of what a person is like comes through in their manner of speech and I always try to capture that when I write.
When did you first start writing?
I was around ten, I think, when I first started writing. My Mom had given me a copy of the Dragonriders of Pern which I fell in love with and one of their friends was a writer himself who encouraged me to create my own worlds. I wrote off and on for a few years, sometimes losing myself for days in writing but it was a reply to a fan letter I wrote to Anne McCaffrey when I was thirteen that really made me want to do this forever. I really hope someday I can inspire someone the way she inspired me just by listening and encouraging a ridiculous, awkward teenager to do what she loved.
