Kyle Pratt

Biography

Hello and thank you for visiting my page on Smashwords. I am the bestselling author of three books. The latest, Through Many Fires, is a post-apocalyptic thriller released in paperback and on Kindle in early August 2013. Within two weeks it appeared on both the Kindle Science Fiction Post-Apocalyptic list, reaching #10, and the Mystery, Thriller and Suspense list, reaching #39. With Smashwords, I’m hoping to grow my readership.

I grew up in the mountains of Colorado and went to Mesa State College in Grand Junction. When money for college ran low I enlisted in the United States Navy. I thought I would do four years and then use my veteran's benefits to go back to college.

My first assignment was with a U.S. Navy unit at the Royal Air Force base in Edzell, Scotland. Two years later while on leave in Israel I met Lorraine from Plymouth, Devon, England. We married the next year. Together we spent the remainder of my twenty year naval career traveling around the world from Guam to Japan, Hawaii and other places. I went to college at night and eventually earned a Bachelor’s degree in political science. Today, Lorraine and I live on a small farm in Western Washington State.

I’m an indie publisher or what Guy Kawasaki calls an “APE,” an Author, Publisher and Entrepreneur. I write the books, publish them and manage the expenses.

In July of 2012 my debut novel, Titan Encounter, a science fiction space adventure, came out on Kindle and later in paperback. Titan Encounter is now on three Amazon bestseller lists. My second book, Final Duty - The Alien War Anthology, a military science fiction short story collection, is out on Kindle since January of 2013. Through Many Fires was released both on Kindle and in paperback in August of 2013. The audiobook will be available in October.

If you've read one or my books and liked it, please leave a review and tell your friends. The best advertisement I could possibly get are reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations. Thank you!

Smashwords Interview

When did you start writing?
I read novels for many years before I ever seriously considered writing one. Often, as I read a book, I would think, I would have done this or that with the plot or characters. I wrote a short story titled Grandma’s House in 1985 while living in Japan and then another three short stories while deployed on board ships in the Pacific before and during the Gulf War, in late 1990 & 1991, but I didn’t even try to get these published at the time.

It wasn’t until I retired from the navy and started attending a local writer’s critique group that I learned enough, and grew confident enough, of my writing to attempt a novel. Twenty-seven years after writing the original draft of Grandma’s House, I released my first novel, Titan Encounter, in July of 2012.
Which books and writers have influenced you?
I didn’t start reading novels until I was in Middle School. The first book I read was Starman Jones by Robert A. Heinlein. After that, I read all of Heinlein’s works. I read many of the science fiction novels of Arthur C. Clark and Isaac Asimov, including his Foundation series.

Also during my teen years I started reading end-of-the-world books, a genre we now call post-apocalyptic. The first book in this genre I read was, The Earth Abides, by George Stewart. Later came books like Alas Babylon, On the Beach, Lucifer’s Hammer and many more.

I have never stopped reading and the list of authors that I enjoy continues to expand.
