Jayne Lockwood

Publisher info

I've been writing for over 20 years. My first successful writing assignment was for the college newspaper of the County College of Morris, in Randolph, New Jersey, where I studied Journalism.

In 2001, Virgin Books published my first novel, Wolf At The Door, for their Black Lace Series. Writing as Savannah Smythe, I have published five books in that genre, before collaborating with Abi Titmuss on her 10 Fantasies book in 2005. Now I am writing more books as Savannah Smythe, details of which can be found on savannahsmythe.com.

The Cloud Seeker is my first mainstream novel, and draws upon my background as a Chiltern woman and my affection for the US, where I lived for two years. Cat Cartwright is the feral woman who catches the attention of a New York man with a terrible secret. In the course of one hot, hazy summer, secrets, lies and restrained passion all bubble under the surface of a quiet English village. Yet the long shadow of 9/11 threatens to destroy both Cat's happiness and that of the young boy she looks after.

Closer Than Blood was first conceived back in 1994 and is the original concept for Wolf At The Door, although the story is much more developed and there have been some dramatic changes to take it out of the pure erotica genre. Pagan Freemantle has to choose between her millionaire half-brother and the hit man sent to kill him, and discovers that passion breaks all the rules.

To date, I am working on my third Jayne Lockwood novel, again set in the Chilterns. Expect a wounded but strong woman and her scarred love interest. And there will be a US connection, but I'm not sure how just yet...

My style is easy to read but very adult in themes and language. I describe it as romantic fiction for people who hate romances. Others say it is not to every taste. Read my books and make up your own mind!

Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the Chilterns, a really lovely part of England only a few miles outside London. It's where I live now, and even in the 21st century, there are still places that are tranquil and unspoilt. I would take off for long walks by myself as a child, and loved exploring the hills and valleys, making up stories as I went. My first full-length novel, The Cloud Seeker, is based around the village where I live. In the summer the chalk hills are alive with orchids and blue butterflies and the beech woods are laced with hidden paths. There are wide open vistas and sun-lit dells. It seemed a suitable place to write about.
When did you first start writing?
I feel as if I've been writing all my life, but in reality, I only started seriously about twenty years ago. Even then, I didn't think I would publish. I was just doing it for my own enjoyment. Then I began to believe in myself. When Virgin Books took me on in 2001, I realised I had no desire to do anything else.

  • Lost Weekend: An Erotic Romance in Wales on July 05, 2013

Ah, Micah and Bryony, such a sweet couple. He's an accountant who has just murdered a man and Bryony has walked in on him, causing him to whisk her away to rainy Wales to hide from a drugs kingpin. And Oh! She didn't even have time to get dressed! In the meantime, Mr. Nasty is after both of them but will he track them down? This is a great story from Ms. Chase. Funny, contemporary, with sharp dialogue and great sex. The scenes between the two main leads are tender and erotic, and apart from the beginning, when Bryony makes her appearance wearing a basque and stockings and not much else, totally unpredictable. I wish all accountants were as hot as Micah. This is a hot little story that packs a big punch. If you want to try erotica, but are slightly intimidated by the choice, this is a great starting place. There are several in the series, detailing erotic weekends in various far-flung places. I chose Wales because erotic and Wales in the same sentence seemed unusual... I bought my copy from Smashwords, as there is a promotion on during July 2013.
  • Murder in Moscow on Jan. 31, 2014

This is a really fun read, very well researched with sparky dialogue and and colourful characters. The story line veers between fantasy and reality, but that is the fun part, never really knowing what is going to happen next. At first I didn't like Cassidy. She seemed a bit of a hard-ass and not very sympathetic, but as you get to know her story, you realise that underneath the tough exterior is a vulnerable woman. When she gets framed for an icky murder in her office, she has to pull all her resources together to find the real culprit, and it comes as a shock both for her and the reader. Oh, and this is proof that erotica writers can go mainstream, and add that delicious spice so lacking in some conventional stories. I wrote this review months ago and put it on Goodreads, but added it here to counteract the 1 star given by a review who obviously hasn't read the book and seems to have another agenda. Don't be swayed. This is a great read.
  • Pandora on May 23, 2014

Hapless Pandora finds herself in the middle of international intrigue when she is kidnapped and carted halfway around the world by Xavier, a ruthless and determined man who has been involved in every part of her life without her knowledge. In the meantime, there is the small matter of global security at stake, as mysterious organisations vie for Xavier's unique skills. Forced into hiding, Pandora finds she is living a life very different to the one she had envisaged back in London. Ms. Chase's books are packed with intrigue, detail, hot sex and romance. A clever book with an interesting take on the "hostage falling for their captor" genre, the central heroine is feminine, quick-witted, and tougher than she looks, whilst her captor has to learn how to control his ruthless nature and read her complex emotions. The characters that surround them are interesting as well; the creepy Ramon, capable Mac, slick Paco. The dialogue is sparky and humorous, and the potentially dry subject matter is treated with a light, deft touch. Pandora is classic Storm Chase, funny, sexy, and intelligent. A great book.
