Lane Lewis

Biography

I am a teacher. Typically, my students are elementary ESL or bilingual learners of which 90+% qualify for free and reduced lunches.

Most of my classes were inclusion with regular education and special education pupils. Yearly, 100% of my children passed 5th grade. Not only did they pass, but also 31% of my classes typically earned Commended scores on Reading TAKS and 56% Commended scores on Math TAKS. Every year I taught I exceeded our state’s average, our district’s average, and our school’s average.

Why do I teach? In 2008, I had a student enter my class in January. After a couple of months, we took TAKS. His mother came to me after TAKS and hugged me. With tears in her eyes, she said all of her son’s teachers had told her that he had a learning disability since he was in 2nd grade, but there he stood as a 5th grader in my class having earned Commended in Reading, Math, and Science.

I am a licensed BSW (Social Worker) and formally a group/individual counselor. I earned Bachelors in Interdisciplinary Studies; I like how subjects interact and affect each other. Additionally, I hold a Master's in Education. I have taught learners of all ages and have been training adults in a variety of capacities for twenty years.

My mother retired from elementary school in 1988. Our family grew up listening to funny stories over dinner. Years later, I found handfuls of scratch paper in her makeup drawer and discovered she had written down stories that had happened with her students. I secretly took the notes and wrote a book. I gave it to her as a Christmas gift. I hope you enjoy these as much as my family and friends.
