Born in Burlingame, California to German parents, Michael Wessel was raised bilingually and spent his elementary school years in the Greater Los Angeles Area. As a child, he loved the beach and still has fond memories of what seemed like endless summers back then. He finished his secondary education in Germany, eventually deciding to enroll at Mainz University, where five years and a semester in France later he obtained a degree in American Studies. During spring and summer breaks, he would routinely head back to the place he'd once called home, visiting old friends, reading books, and trying to better understand those early formative years. He is now an English teacher and lives in Wiesbaden with his Greek wife. They have a son.
While staring at an ominous photograph of a breathtaking sunset in his dormitory in Bordeaux, France, philosophy major Dorian is reminded of a chance encounter with Ramona, a divorced woman, on the boardwalk of Venice Beach, California. The contours of this memory quickly begin to take shape as he sinks further and further into the depths of a dreamlike meditation on life.
