The author was a Counter Terrorist Detective with the Royal Ulster Constabulary/PSNI, working in staunch protestant loyalist and catholic republican areas in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

He received Her Majesty the Queens Commendation for Brave Conduct during his service in Belfast.
