Malcolm R. Campbell

Malcolm R. Campbell is the author of contemporary fantasy novels and paranormal short stories as well as the comedic mystery Jock Stewart and the Missing Sea of Fire (first printing 2009).

The e-book short stories, “Moonlight and Ghosts” (2012) “Cora’s Crossing” (2012), and the three-story set “Emily’s Stories” (2012) are set in the Florida Panhandle where Campbell grew up. He began hearing Florida ghost stories on Scout camping trips in the pinewoods, swamps and other locations which are perfect for strange events. Emily’s Stories is also available as an audiobook.

Campbell’s nonfiction includes the Glacier National Park e-book Bears; Where They Fought – Life in the Swiftcurrent Valley and feature articles in “The Rosicrucian Digest.” “The Inside Trail,” and the National Park Service Glacier Park commemorative book, 100 Years 100 Stories.

His “Jock Talks” satire—namely fictional news stories about real and imagined events—appears in Jock Stewart Strikes Back.

Campbell’s work has also appeared in “Nonprofit World,” “Nostalgia Magazine,” “The Smoking Poet,” the Atlanta “Journal-Constitution”, the Great Lakes “Bulletin,” “Future Earth Magazine,” “Quail Bell” and training and manufacturing trade magazines. His career has also included grant writing for nonprofit organizations.

An avid reader and book reviewer, Campbell especially enjoys the novels of Sunetra Gupta, Italo Calvino, Diana Gabaldon, Susanna Clarke, Cormac McCarthy and Carlos Ruiz Zafon.

Smashwords Interview

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My first inspiration comes from the racket caused by our three cats outside the bedroom door if I don’t get up by the time they’re ready for breakfast. However, soon after feeding them (and having my first cup of coffee) I’m lured back into the imaginary world of my latest story. As a child, I was encouraged to read and to explore my imagination. I never lost the excitement I discovered reading books late into the night when I was supposed to be doing my homework. There’s no limit to what might happen in a story. I’m an avid reader, and when I’m not reading, I’m making up my own stories. My wife and friends tell me that when I’m at work on a new story, I have no clue what’s happening in real life. They’re probably right.
What books have most influenced your life?
Since I write contemporary fantasy, books in that genre inspire me and fuel by imagination more than any other. Strong influences include stories about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, “Dune,” “The Chronicles of Narnia,” and Stephen R. Donaldson’s series of Thomas Covenant fantasies that began in 1977 with “Lord Foul’s Bane.” I’ve enjoyed all of Isabel Allende’s magical realism and, more recently, “Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell” and “The Night Circus.” Reading these books is almost like drinking a powerful magic potion: they send me off into dazzling flights of fancy, and when I come back, I have more new stories to tell.
