Maryam Henein

Biography

Maryam Henein is a journalist, filmmaker and entrepreneur. She directed the documentary Vanishing of the Bees and is founder of HoneyColony.com.

A native of Montreal, Canada, Henein is of Egyptian Canadian heritage. Henein interviewed documentarian Morgan Spurlock for Penthouse, as well as produced documentaries for the UK’s September Films on subjects that include pimps, drug dealers and porn stars in the Los Angeles area.[2] She was also part of First Apartment, a reality show webcast in the late '90s and early 2000s on the now-defunct website crushedplanet.com, produced by Taxicab Confessions' Joe and Harry Gantz.

Following a near-fatal pedestrian versus car crash that dragged her for 49 feet, which broke her leg, vertebrae and several ribs and necessitated a titanium rod for her recovery in 2002, she researched issues of health and nutrition to help her in her recovery and became aware of colony collapse disorder.

With George Langworthy, Henein directed the 2010 documentary (which took five years to produce), Vanishing of the Bees with Ellen Page narrating the film.

Since the release of Vanishing of the Bees, Henein has become an outspoken advocate of bees and bee colonies, non-GMO foods and the release of pesticides into the environment.[6] Henein is the founder of HoneyColony Inc., a member supported online magazine that hosts a number of optimized-health and investigative writers called "Hive Advisers". Henein continues to work on projects involving bees and contamination of the food supply. She is working on a memoir titled Of Bees & Men and launched a year-long Save the Bees campaign in June 2014.

Smashwords Interview

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I am moved by infinite possibilities. I start my day by telling the universe to use me to the best of it's ability to be in service. I ask to be led to inspire others.. There are days because of my autoimmune (around my menstrual cycle) that it's hard to get out of bed. But I always have so much to do in regards to my startup.

I am excited by new opportunities I can create to get the word out there in regards to healing, the bees, our food supply.

When I am in Greece in my small village, I am inspired by the ocean. Almost every day i take my waterproof ipod into the ocean and listen to jammin music or podcasts as i do the breathstroke. This notion of listening to music underwater while observing fishies is super cool!

I love cross-pollinating with others and collaborating.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Well, i spend A LOT of time in front of my computa. Like a lot. I edit, i converse via Slack and Skype with my small hive. Writing is a luxury and it takes time and patience. So i am usually helping run and grow HoneyColony and write early in the day. I work as CEO of my company AND editor in chief.

I take the time to excercise. I bike, and back in los angeles i am a hard core modo yoga fan. I love being on the mat and practicing yoga. I spend time cooking or preparing meals when i have access to clean food.

I dance too.
