Smashwords Interview

What's the story behind your latest book?
This book has pretty much been a life-long labor of love for me to write a novel. It might be hard to believe but it has taken me the last 15 or so years to complete this book! I always had in the back of my mind what the theme, story and main characters were but it just took me a long time to fill in the spaces all around them and throughout the story. I would also stop and start a lot, put off the writing for a while, maybe even a year and then get the interest to write going again and take back off. I went through a lot of personal change in my life during that time and that in itself took a toll on my writing time.

As mentioned, I always had the main theme and characters in my head and I took a lot of experiences, places and people I met growing up in Winchester, Kentucky and later living in Louisville, Kentucky and used them to fill in the rest of the story and characters that went with it.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've always had an interest in writing, producing poetry and short stories and I have always been a big reader of the Newspaper, magazines and all genre of books so I felt I had a good foundation to start writing a novel from. The advent of the internet and the subsequent ease with which it allowed anyone to publish anything I believe has taken a toll on what publishing companies will now take from an undiscovered, new author. I mean I see people self publishing material that a 3rd grader could write better and now the market of books out there is just wide open, like a dam that has burst! So, I really believed from the start that publishing as an indie author was the only way to go as I just didn't see spending lots of time submitting to publishers only to be rejected from the shear volume of material I would think they receive.
