Smashwords Interview

How do you approach cover design?
The best way to design your cover is to study what the professionals are doing. The industry constantly evolves and it's important to remain current. Fortunately this is not difficult. Go to any online bookstore and study how major publishing houses design their covers. Don't study independent writers who may not have the resources, software or experience to design covers. Choose your genre and click on the best sellers. How dominate are the different parts of the cover? What colors do they use? What fonts are trending now and what is the proportion of the Author's name to the title. Is there a review on the cover? What about a tag line such as "From the Author of ----- " It's OK to borrow ideas but not to steal other's works and photos. Test your book cover design and if it's not working try something new. It's the beauty of eBooks.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Practically anything by the late Stephen E. Ambrose including Undaunted Courage, Nothing LIke it in the World and Band of Brothers. I enjoy biographies and historical works.

The first novel I read when I was about fourteen was Jack London's Call of the Wild, White Fang and Return to the Wild. It fostered my love of reading.

More recently, I enjoyed Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand.

It was a pleasure working with Ira on this project. Even as a seasoned sales pro, I found useful insight and reminders of stuff long forgotten. This is a refreshing change from the "same old same old" dry, boring, tedious sales manuals I've plowed through over the years. I won't wish Ira good luck because we sales guys make our own luck.
