Sandra Yuen MacKay
Sandra has a Fine Arts Diploma from Langara College in Vancouver and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia, majoring in art history. She is an artist and exhibits her colorful acrylic paintings locally.
Her articles, stories and poems have appeared in Front Magazine, The Bulletin, The Prairie Journal, and other print and online publications.
She has given numerous talks about her recovery to mental health consumers, families, high school, college and university students, and mental health professionals. Some of her speaking engagements have been through the British Columbia Schizophrenia Society.
She worked jointly on a program evaluation of The Art Studios (a program which offers classes in the creative arts to people with mental health conditions) and helped to organize and co-lead focus groups. As a result, she jointly published an article on collaborative practice between occupational therapists and mental health consumers, which appeared in the PSR/RPS Express newsletter in the fall of 2008. She spoke at the 2009 Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists Conference about the program evaluation and the benefits of the program in her own recovery.
In the past, she taught creative writing. She has experience as a liaison worker for the Consumer Initiative Fund, which offers peer-run leisure and educational activities for people with mental illness. She also has experience as a columnist and editor for Majestic, an online newsletter for Lit.org, an online writers' forum.
Sandra believes strongly in reducing stigma and building awareness of mental illness.
