Nael Roberts

Biography

Nael Roberts (Nael is pronounced ‘Nile’) was born in 1964 in the North East of England and later moved to London, where he worked briefly for the BBC.

In 1988, he wrote the original version of ‘Legacy of the Vampire’, which was called at that time ‘Seduction of Evil’. Its title was changed after advice from a publisher, recommending that the subject matter of ‘vampire’ should be put into the title.

The original version was revisited in 2013 and subsequently published as an e-book, closely followed by the second and third instalments that year also.

Nael attributes much of his fervent imagination to watching many old Hammer Horror movies and comic books as a child, culminating in his own publication of comic books with his grammar-school classmates.

Each book generally takes Nael a month to actually write, but several months to research.

All of the characters are derived from Nael’s own personality, however the names of the characters are derived from associates’ feline friends.

Books 2 and 3 of the Communicator/Vampire Chronicles were based in Durham, a city which he still visits to this day.

Smashwords Interview

How do you approach cover design?
I discuss it with the artist I've used for some time, Trev, who is a friend I've known for years and he worked for the film and game industry and so has a vast knowledge of the criteria required.
Sometimes I give him pencil drawings of ideas and then I'm presented with several finished version which I can choose from. (All are available on my website) I find his approach very open and he captures the essence of the contents of the books perfectly. The actual overall design is my own concept but its an amalgamation of ideas and sources. The original drawing for Legacy was painted by myself and is a pastiche of my own eyes. My painting skills are somewhat limited, and at times you have to bow to the greater resource in order to attain your desired goal.
There is a small group of writers and supportive people involved in the creative side of our works, all of whom have a talent or talents, which can be utilized in different areas. We have discovered that, because of our positive support of one another, a strong sense of achievement has been attained in such a short time.
When it comes to research I have a good friend Tracy, who probably knows the books better than I do and she's a great proof reader, we end up wandering around old cities and graveyards searching for ideas and background history for the books. Most of the places, events and individuals in the novels have some elements of factual truth related to them, but they are primarily derived from my imagination.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Wuthering Heights - one of the first books that I read when I became aware of the novel, I had seen the old b\w movie as a child and found it harrowing. I love the bleakness of the writing and the stupidity of the selfish characters. It shows that as history moves forward, people never change.
A Christmas Carol - I've always been a big fan of Dickens. I like the way that his writing is a mirror of society. Who doesn't like this book? The Alastair Simm movie version is the best as well. I always watch it around Christmas and have it on blu ray.
Cider With Rosie - I was introduced to this book at school when I was aged about 8 and I love the simplistic way that the story unfolds through a child's eyes. It's one of those books that never leaves you. I really love the way it draws you into the child's world and holds you there with every page.
Dracula - This book gives you everybody else's opinion on how dark and deceitful the Dracula character is, but you never get Dracula's viewpoint. Its a good reflection on prejudice, just imagine, its a bit like when you start work in a new job, everyone wants to tell you who to be friends with, causing dilemma and discord. All the Dracula character is searching for is companionship and love. Isn't everyone?
Check out the Spanish 1932 version that was filmed at the same time as the original Bela Lugosi version.
The Snowman - Jo Nesbo's book is very intriguing and takes a fictional police genre to a different level. I found the series of book very good, well worth a read.
