What a delightful read! Set in California desert in the early 1900s, during the infancy of the movie-making business, this story captivated me. Fascinating era, fascinating backdrop, and fascinating to learn something of the motion picture industry's infancy. Oh, and a lovely romance!!! It also made a nice change from the grittier stuff I usually read.

I'm a huge fan of Alice Duncan (writing as Rachel Wilson, in this instance), and the heroine in this book, Georgina Witherspoon, might be my favorite Duncan heroine yet! What she does when it appears the hero might be having second thoughts about ravishing her cemented it for me! As ever, Alice/Rachel does a great job with the sexual tension, and the love scenes are delicious. :-)

I adored this book. What a way to start, with the heroine giving birth in a wagon and the hero having to assist! As always, Emma Craig/Alice Duncan does a great job with characterization. The heroine's backstory was extremely compelling and heart wrenching, and Cody was a true hero. But I loved ALL the characters. Cody's taciturn, possibly slow brother Arnold. The owner of the wagon yard, the mysterious (and magic) McMurdo. For some reason, my brain insisted on picturing McMurdo as Trick, the guy who owns the fae bar in the TV show "Lost Girl" and is secretly the vanished king of the faeries or some such thing. Which makes no sense, because Trick is a dwarf and McMurdo isn't, but there you go. However you picture the characters, this is another great story from Emma/Alice!

Loved it! This is Book 2 in Alice Duncan's "Dream Maker" series, set in the pioneering days of movie making. Our hero, Colin (the Brain), is an expert on American Indians and has been hired to advise the filmmakers. (Except they've already imported a bunch of Navajos to play the role of the Apaches, except even that's wrong -- it shold have been Hunkpapa Indians, given the setting. Poor Colin!) Brenda is the Beauty, and the star of the film. She's a breath of fresh air, while Colin comes off as a fussy intellectual. Brenda knows right away that Colin is the man for her, but Colin can't quite bring himself to believe she's really attracted to him. This leads to some very funny scenes, and also to some very passionate ones! A lovely tale.

  • The Shop of Shades and Secrets on June 07, 2011

I loved this story! It's first and foremost a romance (wow, did I love seeing free-spirited Fiona Murphy loosen up the extremely uptight lawyer H. Gideon Nath III, or H. Gideon, as she thinks of him), but I loved the paranormal element and the mystery, as well. And how fitting that the shop that Fiona inherits, and around which so much of the story centers, is on the cover! It was a character in and of itself, which gave it a sort of modern Gothic feel. Great secondary characters, suspense, and some cool surprises. A very cohesive, very compelling read!

SHATTERED is one of those books you hate to put down to go to work or go to sleep. I was grabbed right away by the H&h, Jay and Tess, and their chemistry is palpable. (I love me a brooding, wounded cop, and this one has retired to ranching life, so he's a cowboy, too!) The mystery kept me guessing to the very last moment. This is definitely an author to check out. Her voice and her unique turn of phrase really elevate her stories, in my opinion.
