Nick Valenzuela

Biography

Nick Valenzuela's debut novel was published after he survived a 20+ year career investigating civil rights complaints for municipal and federal government. His extensive, groundbreaking fair housing and hate crime investigations led to benchmark case law for multiple protected classes from unlawful discrimination, but also to professional counseling. His writing is based on his experiences, masked as literary fiction.

Smashwords Interview

What are you working on next?
I have about 1/3 of a sequel to Lack of Appeal written. So far, there's more straight narrative story than the included memoir-ish moments cited in the original. But, the plots are again modeled from real-life cases. I really love the idea of Respondents (e.g., housing providers) having more of a voice this time around: responses for and against government investigation; free-market dangers to, and support of, discrimination issues; and, nexus to non-profit agency roles moderating (arbitrating?) between the public and private sectors.
Who are your favorite authors?
A lot of individual written works stand out, but I'll go with James Frey and Douglas Coupland.
