What inspired you to write The Ultimate God Conspiracy?
When I left the Netherlands in early 1996 I had a lot of time on my hands. I thought that would give me time to write a book. But I had no idea what my book was going to be about. You know, I once walked into bookstore in Amsterdam and that discouraged me from writing a book at all. I wandered through four or five floors crammed with thousands of books about every imaginable subject. I really thought at the time: who needs another book?
So what made you change your mind?
I started working in the Netherlands for daily newspapers; later I moved to a magazine-publisher. There I was confronted with the same dilemma. How do you write something for a monthly or even a weekly magazine that has already been covered by daily newspapers and TV? The answer I got was always: you are going to write a better story. When I was searching for a topic for my book I thought about all the fiction that is already out there: murder, kidnapping, shadow governments and of course conspiracies.
