It's been a long journey writing these books. I suppose I should tell you about the big work; Allies and Adversaries. It is a massive exercise in world-building. I've spent almost ten years writing the eight volumes that make up this title, three of which (Cracked Dagger, Enter the Flame, and Betrayal) are available on this site, with the remaining five being released over the next year or two. It isn't set on the Earth, which was important for me, as I wanted it to be all mine, from its history, to is future, to the relationship the planet Novan has to the rest of the universe. Like any long work, it requires a little bit of patience, especially with the first volume, Cracked Dagger. But I assure you, the path is well laid out, and has many exciting twists and turns leading to a satisfying conclusion.
Last Man in Heaven is set in the same universe as Allies and Adversaries, but centered on Earth. It is a science-fiction retelling of the journeys of Odysseus, at least that work serves as a foundation. It is one of many works I've written in the Allies and Adversaries universe, all telling different stories of how major events impacted the cosmos.
Blake: Short Stories is also set in the same universe. Blake is an exercise in fun! It's great to write about the hyper-macho hero with the take-no-sh*t attitude. How will it all end? The second and final volume should be completed late 2011.
And then there's The Seventh Age of Man. Also set in the Allies and Adversaries universe, on Earth, it is a post-apocalyptic work divided into three volumes.
In case you're wondering, I graduated from Grinnell College with a degree in English and Fine Art. I first started working on Allies and Adversaries on the train ride to visit my then girlfriend. I wrote the first draft in longhand, and after several abortive attempts, I finally typed it into the computer. I don't know if many writers still use longhand, but transposing it into the computer had to be the most irritating thing I had ever done! And when I finished, this work I thought was so good only amounted to fifty pages.
Over time, I developed the story, fleshed out the characters, so almost all of them can stand on their own merits. Any one of them could have a book written about them. I've let other works I've read influence me, from the works of Ayn Rand, to the works of Frank Herbert, and even Herman Hesse -- they all have helped me decide how to develop the characterization.
And along the way I've written dozens of short stories, honing my craft, and have been published in numerous publications. What you see here is the end-sum of a very long amount of work. I hope you enjoy reading it, as much as I've enjoyed writing it.
