Xenofestation
Twelve women. Sixty aliens. One purpose. Why would somebody apply to join the experimental Xenoplantation Programme? Why would she travel to a remote space station, to willingly mate with a bewildering variety of alien creatures, carrying their squirming offspring inside her warm body? For some, it’s a chance to escape an overcrowded Earth, a society that controls reproductive rights with a draconian grip, obliging all but the richest to seal their wombs for life. Others are on the run from underworld gang lords or hiding dark secrets. Then there are the xeno cults, who believe enlightenment can be found only by submission to alien need. There are rewards, untold riches and indescribable pleasures, for those brave enough to reach for them. But pleasure has a price, and rewards come with risks, not just from the creatures. For the shadowy Syndicate is never far behind, and that is harder to escape than the clutches of any alien. The Xenoplantation Programme is always hungry for new flesh. Because the human body is the perfect cradle for bearing life. But not just human life... Xenofestation is a series of darkly erotic sci-fi adventures of oviposition and alien implantation.

The Oviposition Chronicles
The human body is the perfect cradle for bearing life. But not just human life. Over nameless eons, aliens have used us as host for their unknowable brood. For what safer place to lay their countless eggs than to hide them in the warm belly of a human female? Inside a fertile girl whose body is receptive, ripe for filling with the dread larvae of a slavering alien beast? An inquisitive girl who yearns to see her belly swell as new life grows within her womb? A naïve girl who secretly craves the wicked delights of being corrupted? A vulnerable girl who - even as she realises the fate that awaits at the bulging tip of the ovipositor - will still meekly come to have it done? An alien creature, seeking a host for its burgeoning cargo of slimy eggs, can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are pregnant. Beware the cold night. For the alien lurks in darkness. And a woman is the warmest place to hide. The Oviposition Chronicles are a series of darkly erotic tales on the theme of oviposition - the implantation of eggs, often by fantastic and fearsome creatures, into innocent humans.
The Tidy Girl Saga
Straight-laced straight-A student Gemma Codrington likes everything to be neat and well-ordered. She is on her way to university and she takes pride in being good at everything she does. She's even determined to be very good at sex, if she ever finds the time to have any. But a chance encounter with a mysterious couple at one of her brother's wild parties makes Gemma realise there are some lessons that can't be learned from a text book. Under the tutelage of the exotic Lorena and the muscular Gus (together with his "twin brother" Leo) she finds herself juggling studies and sin, discovering that - to get what she needs - a tidy girl must sometimes be prepared to get messy. From dungeons to supermarkets, from buses to back alleys, Gemma is about to learn her most important lesson of all - that the world is full of perils and wonders for a girl with no knickers.

  • Daydreams & Distractions: Book One on Oct. 08, 2020

A fun little collection of stories, in a variety of styles. Most are quite short, no more than one or two pages, so if one doesn't appeal there's another along in a minute.
  • The Jody Stevens Omnibus: 11 Erotic Stories on Nov. 20, 2020

A lively collection of short stories. The, ah, pay-off at the end is quite similar between the various tales, but what makes these stories stand out is the varied and inventive ways Jody Stevens takes to get her characters into the situations she weaves for them. The plots build in a very satisfying way, and the author has some very lovely turns-of-phrase. If - as I do - you enjoy the build to the climax just as much as the climax itself, there's a lot to recommend here. Some stories - Prison Guard, Jungle Gangbang and College Girl are examples - are genuine five star tales, and I don't give those ratings out lightly. I just wish Smashwords would allow me to add separate reviews against those titles in the catalogue.
  • The Monster Sex Experiment: Episode 1 on Dec. 17, 2020

This episode The first part of this series spends most of its time establishing the setting, before starting us in with the monsters. It's clever, the circular prison environment is well thought through, and there are details that will prove useful later. The monster scene feels a little rushed into, but overall a solid start. The tension will ratchet up as the series goes on... The Series A group of girls are imprisoned and ravished by a series of fearsome and outlandish alien beasts. Nothing so unusual in that so far. But it's the way in which the story is handled by the author that makes this particular collection stand out. The setting - a circular prison with transparent walls - and the way in which each girl is subjected to her ordeal in turn, is effective, building suspense as the story unfolds. The monster encounters are interspersed with back-story, with each girl slowly revealing a dark secret in her past, which adds variety and depth to the narrative. The author's use of callbacks and way they move around the characters within the story is well-handled, so it is not just isolated episodes; we involve multiple characters at a time. The switch between present tense for the prison scenes and past tense for flashbacks is effective. The author has been very inventive in their selection of monsters, with a wide variety of experiences, and this - along with the flashbacks - means the story never gets stale or repetitive. They have also put considerable effort into detail, and into making the characters seem like individuals, rather than 20 cookie cutter clones. There is enough characterisation to make this work well without being overbearing. The story is angled quite a long way towards the dub side of dubcon, particularly as the later episodes unfold. The peril, and the consent side, ratchets up sharply from about episode 5 onwards. I think this really works, and it is intense, but be aware of this. If there is a criticism, and it's a minor one, I think sometimes the journey from reluctant to willing is quite sudden in some cases. I like to see this journey spelled out, it's a big part of the interest for me; we all know where the character is going to end up, it's the getting there that interests. This aspect is I think handled more deftly as the series goes on, and probably works better in the flashbacks rather than the prison scenes. Overall, I really love these stories. At 10 episodes, we're only a quarter of the way through the characters, and I very much hope the author finds time to carry on showing us what is in store for the rest.
  • The Monster Sex Experiment: Episode 2 on Dec. 17, 2020

Episode 2 A large part of this episode is taken up with a flashback, which establishes a pattern of interspersing "conventional" encounters with alien ones. This instalment is effective, and while the character tips quite quickly from reluctant to consenting, the scene is handled well, with some great descriptive writing. • The Monster Sex Experiment: Episode 3 on Dec. 17, 2020

Episode 3 Back to the aliens. And we start to see there could be wide variety in the aliens, with a very different creature coming in to ravish the girl selected this time. We also see that the girls' captors are working their way clockwise round the cells, so anticipation and dread start to build for the person in the next cell along. I'm not going to describe the creatures at all, because I think a big part of the fun is not knowing what's going to come through the door next. Suffice to say, the writer has been inventive here. This episode works very well. The Series A group of girls are imprisoned and ravished by a series of fearsome and outlandish alien beasts. Nothing so unusual in that so far. • The Monster Sex Experiment: Episode 4 on Dec. 17, 2020

Episode 4 A flashback episode, and a good one. One of the characters reveals an embarassing past. This episode is very well-written. It does work its way along the dubious end of consent, so be aware. The Series A group of girls are imprisoned and ravished by a series of fearsome and outlandish alien beasts. • The Monster Sex Experiment: Episode 5 on Dec. 17, 2020

Episode 5 Oh my. This starts as a monster episode, with a third type of monster. Not my absolute favourite monster among the weird and wonderful imaginings of the author, but still deftly handled. But then it all kicks off. I won't say exactly what happens, but it is properly shocking, and demonstrates the author is not afraid to take the story wherever it may lead. All bets are off after this episode, and the peril is ratcheted up as a result. The narrative is all the better for it. Don't read unless you're prepared for things to be intense. • The Monster Sex Experiment: Episode 6 on Dec. 17, 2020

Episode 6 Phew. Episode 5 was intense, and the author is not releasing their grip now. A flashback episode, and a very good one indeed. Pregnancy peril is one of my things, and there's a bit here that, well, I had to go away for a bit to gather my thoughts. One of my favourite episodes in this series. • The Monster Sex Experiment: Episode 7 on Dec. 17, 2020

Episode 7 I think this is my favourite of all (10 Monster Sex Experiment episodes that have been published at time of writing). A monster episode, and at first the monster doesn't seem that interesting, but then... oh my. Well, this episodes hits a lot of my hot buttons, and hits them hard. Without giving too much away, if you like to get squelchy, you will like this episode. The Series A group of girls are imprisoned and ravished by a series of fearsome and outlandish alien beasts. • The Monster Sex Experiment: Episode 8 on Dec. 17, 2020

Episode 8 I like this episode very much. It's a flashback to a sordid past, it's deftly handled, there's more pregnancy peril, which is one of my things, and we also see how the strands of the protagonists' past lives interweave. The author has clearly put a lot of effort into this narrative, and the care shows through. • The Monster Sex Experiment: Episode 9 on Dec. 17, 2020

Episode 9 A monster scene. Very well done, though for perfection I'd like the transition from - how can I put it? - from out to in, to get a little more description. The writing is confident, and we've seen five different creatures so far. The Series A group of girls are imprisoned and ravished by a series of fearsome and outlandish alien beasts. Nothing so unusual in that so far. But it's the way in which the story is handled by the author that makes this particular collection stand out. • The Monster Sex Experiment: Episode 10 on Dec. 17, 2020

Episode 10 The last part published at time of writing, and I really hope the author returns to pick up the threads. It is clear from what we've seen that they've big plans for the imprisoned girls, both those who have already been selected and those who still await their ordeal. I'd really love to see what happens next. This episode is a flashback, and it's not really in my area of interest, but it is still very well written and given the wide variety of the episodes there will inevitably be ones that excite more than others. That's something to take away from the ten episodes I've read and reviewed - there is a wide variety of stuff going on here, inventively and deftly related by the author, so if you like the general genre I'm pretty certain you'll find something here to like very much. Highly highly recommmended. The Series A group of girls are imprisoned and ravished by a series of fearsome and outlandish alien beasts. Nothing so unusual in that so far. • Grace Vilmont's Weird Sex on Dec. 28, 2020

A mixed bag of a collection. The author is clearly full of ideas and invention, and there are some very effective moments in these stories, but it all feels... unfinished and rough, like they were in such a hurry to get on to the next idea that they rushed these stories out so they could move on. The first two, Alien Eggs and Demonbred, feel like they peter out before the story is complete. Sea God feels a bit more self-contained, but Taken by the Dragon is so crammed with interfering, tangentially-connected threads that it becomes incoherent. All four stories would really have benfited mightily from another draft, firm editing, and some attention to proof-reading. There's some really excellent writing here, but it struggles to break free of that unfinished feeling. All that said, I am seeking out more of this author's work. There's some great ideas in here!

Very good, very nearly very very good. Would like to see a bit more from this world, and the creatures on it.
  • Due to the Dead on July 28, 2021

Okay, so you should know from the synopsis what you're getting into when you read this story, so I'm not going to concentrate on that, save to say the story delivers a neat and well-paced darkly erotic double-shot, and not in the way you might expect. What I'd like to concentrate on more in this review is the writing. The author clearly knows their art, and they've clearly taken a great deal of care. It shows; there's not a word, not a phrase out of place. I found the prose as much a delight as the story. This is the first of Celia McKinley's stories I've read. It won't be the last. Six stars if i could.

Really, really good. Dark, but it builds the tension and the suspense well, and the author has a really accomplished style which carries the narrative forward. Highly recommended.

A great story. The author has such a way with words, they know exactly how to build a narrative, exactly how much background and characterisation to include to give enough depth to the story without over-burdening it, and there's a wonderful phrasing at play here. Highly recommended.

What a well-written story. I sometimes find tentacle/plant stories a bit lacking in something, and in the case of this story I wasn't always convinced by Seph, or the main character's interactions with it. However, it was so well-written, with a wonderful turn of phrase, and a way of bringing the main character's story to life, that it just drew me on. I think the deftly-handled ending justified the journey. This story only really makes sense as a whole, so buy all three parts together.
  • Hysteria: A Victorian Medical Exam Erotica on Aug. 12, 2021

For a writer, the only thing more annoying than finding somebody has already written a story you were planning to write, is finding somebody has already written a story you were planning to write and done a really good job of it. That sound you can hear is me gnashing my teeth at how good this story it. Wolfe has a good eye for prose, creates a lively Victorian setting, and the result is a really fun story. I was surprised how quickly the story was over; I think in part this is because the author has put a significant number of samples and blurbs for other books at the end, so on my ereader the story had finished when my page counter said I was barely more than halfway through the page count. Even so, a five star story.
  • Devil's Bargain: A Zombie Apocalypse Erotica on Aug. 15, 2021

Really good story, written from alternating perspectives. The way the narrative develops means there isn't as much suspense or overt peril as you might otherwise expect from a story written against the backdrop of a zombie apocalypse, which is perhaps a slight missed opportunity; however, the author more than makes up for this by being really adept at writing sex scenes, and this makes the story a solid five stars. A quarter of the length is taken with excerpts of other stories, which is fine, but does mean the story ends sooner than you might expect.
  • The Pit and the Maiden on Aug. 17, 2021

Oh, I do so enjoy a Celia McKinley book. The writing is so beautifully constructed, clearly written with such care, and there's a wicked little streak to every story that lurks just under the surface. You're never quite sure what's going to happen; it feels like *anything* could happen. This story didn't end quite how I expected, and it's nice once in a while to find yourself fooled into expecting one thing and getting another. This writer deserves to be read more widely. Five stars.
  • Cemetery Girl on Aug. 22, 2021

This story of an encounter between a paranormal investigator and a lonely ghost is beautifully handled, with a wistfulness and sense of longing that perfectly suits the tale. McKinley really knows how to write supernatural tales which keep the reader hooked. It's highly-charged erotica, but it's also literary short story fiction of the highest quality.
  • Faceless Strangers: Volume 1 (Bundle) on Aug. 27, 2021

I understand the stories in this collection are among the author's earliest works. And, to be fair, it is possible to tell in the writing, because they're a little bit less polished than some of McKinley's later works. But at the same time their rough edges make them at times head-spinningly raw and dirty. And, alongside the rough, there's genuine poetry in the prose. Flesh and Blood builds beatifully to its climax, and I love the question mark left in its ending. Virtually Invisible is based on a premise so clever and yet so simple I can't believe I haven't thought of it myself, Any Given Friday and Diary of a Straphanger sail closest to the wind, dubcon-wise, but both give a close reading inside the heads of women whose nights, and needs, don't turn out how they expected. Both these latter stories take common tropes in dubcon storytelling and, while playing them straight down the middle, manage to surprise both with the quality of their imagery and - in the case of Any Given Sunday - building the story and the erotic tension beyond the point where a less-skilled writer could take it. Highly recommended, this set, and a stunning debut for a truly talented writer..
  • Imps of the Perverse on Aug. 29, 2021

A centuries-old supernatural mystery. A girl exploring places she shouldn't. A seeker of forbidden knowledge. People who are not what they seem, whose motives are veiled in secrecy. And a pack of ravening, demonic imps, whose lust is matched only by the equally fierce passions of those they ensnare. All these threads McKinley skilfully weaves into a story which grabs the reader and pulls them towards its dark, shivering climax, with just a tantalising little twist at the end. Top drawer.
  • The Boys Next Door on Sep. 01, 2021

What happens when the idle dreams of a bored soccer mom become, well, dreams? The answer is in McKinley's latest book. The story is played straight up, all the way up, the excitement of the climax no less satisfying for its inevitability. Recommended.
  • Crimes of Passion: Volume 1 (Bundle) on Sep. 09, 2021

There are a lot of stories out there in the "erotic" sphere that touch on the core theme of this collection - non-consensual sexual situations. Many do so in an abusive, misogynistic, titillatory, way. Others do so by trying to approach the subject obliquely, by sidling up to it and almost seeming to hope the reader doesn't notice what's going on, just as I'm holding back on using the word "rape" to describe the subject matter of these stories, even though that's ultimately what it is. Celia McKinley does neither of these things. The stories in this collection are both very direct and entirely respectful of their characters. This is both refreshing and rather disquieting, given the subject matter. The stories largely operate from the perspectives of their female characters, and for that reason are very intense, and pretty raw. There's no pussy-footing around the subject; it is all here and it is all laid bare. It's all also written in McKinley's trademark beautifully-crafted prose. And yet at the same time, it's, well, often uncomfortable to sit so close to the characters. This is particularly true in "Hannah's Choice", which is perhaps the most profound journey into the mind of the victim I have read in the context of erotic fiction, and at the same time somewhat difficult to read as a result. Is it erotic? Can the subject ever be erotic? I suppose that's a question for the individual, but if you're considering reading this collection and wondering on that subject, then I can say the closest you're ever likely to get to a yes answer to your question is to be found here. It's brilliant. It's profound. It's unsettling. Perhaps that's what we hope for from the very best fiction, even as we murmur in disquiet. Read this collection, if you can.
  • Faceless Strangers: Volume 2 (Bundle) on Sep. 17, 2021

Faceless Strangers is a collection of stories around the theme of anonymous encounters, whether publicly intimate, or intimately public. While that theme is a common strand linking the tales, each goes about its subject quite differently. Gentleman's Agreement is poignant and passionate, suffused with a sense of impending loss and the fierce grasp of life. Lost in the Crowd is breathless and tight and claustrophobic, the protagonist caught as much by her own thoughts and feelings as by the crowd in which she is trapped. And there is a neat symmetry about Three's a Crowd and Dance Card Days; the sense of a story coming full circle, two women separated by centuries yet travelling the same path. I am rapidly running out of superlatives to describe Celia McKinley's work. This collection is truly sparkling, and written as always with the eye for detail, and emotion, and the beautifully-turned phrase that characterises all this author's work. Read it, you will not be disappointed.
  • The Wendy House on Sep. 24, 2021

A swift little tale, very sensual, written with the same dramatic eye and erotic tension of all McKinley's books. It's particularly nice to see the effort taken towards introducing mid-20th Century idiom to the prose, and this attention to detail really helps with the sense of place and time. I would like to see more from this little corner of the English countryside.
  • Blue Book Diaries on Sep. 24, 2021

A neat premise, deftly executed. The key erotic moments are very hot indeed, and the care this author takes in creating and sustaining their scenario is always a treat to read. My tabletop gaming sessions were never like this!
  • The Hungry Forest on Sep. 28, 2021

This has everything I love in paranormal erotica: a spooky setting, a situation of genuine peril, an unexpected antagonist, an unexpected twist, and a climax that is both incredibly erotic and at the same time quite poignantly life-affirming. I don't want to give away any of the plot but, just as you think you know where the story is going, events take a turn which ratchets up the tension, and the erotic heat, while turning the characters' respective roles on their heads. Like all the best twists, it's both unexpected and yet in hindsight one can see the little breadcrumb trail foreshadowing it. This is a little longer than the usual Celia McKinley story, and boy is the extra length used to full effect. The whole story is written against a setting which is both subtle yet richly-realised, in a style that demonstrates once again the care and attention this author takes with their work. Fantastic.
  • Dreadful Desires: Volume 2 (Bundle) on Oct. 12, 2021

Four spooky tales of the paranormal, highly charged with erotic tension. Each story has its own distinct flavour, but all are spiced with McKinley's own brand of beautifully-turned prose. All are wonderful in their own ways, but a particular favourite is The Miller's Daughter, steeped in folklore and perfectly-paced, a character who makes bargain after bargain, discovery after discovery, surrender after surrender, in a tale that is both breathtakingly naughty and surprisingly touching. Highly recommended for anybody who likes their erotica spookily beautiful.
  • The Close and Holy Darkness on Oct. 19, 2021

Great building of suspense here, real thriller/horror movie stuff, waiting for what lies on the other side of the door. And what is revealed is no normal intruder. With the whole piece written in McKinley's usual evocative style, this is definitely a story to savour. Maybe not on Christmas Eve, though, unless you're brave...
  • Brute Brute Heart on Nov. 06, 2021

As a character study of an abusive relationship, it's not exactly a light read, but it is beaufifully written, as all Celia McKinley's stories are, and Melanie's inner dialogue and motivations feel utterly authentic. The sense of wanting to keep a poker face, of trying not to show one's revealing outward tells, is a particularly effective way of describing in a short story a relationship which has been going on, destructively, for far longer than we get to see on the page. There's a hint of ambiguity about the ending which is intriguing, and the overall result, ambitious in its aim to tackle a difficult subject, is expertly delivered.
  • Up and Down the Line on Nov. 06, 2021

Twisty as a very twisty thing, this one. I've read most of Celia McKinley's books, and got used to the tendency for the narrative to change direction, but this story ups the unpredictable ante. Suffice to say, I didn't see where the ending was going to land. The journey to that ending is as breathtakingly tightly-described and heated as McKinley's best, but what is particularly pleasing in this story is that the main character - Abby - is steadily driving herself onward to that conclusion as much as being driven, and this leads to an ending as tender as it is erotic. If you like stories of furtive and dangerously public erotic encounters, and I very much do, I think you will enjoy this story as much as I did.
  • Ghost Country on Nov. 24, 2021

This story combines themes and characters from McKinley's previous stories, Cemetery Girl and Season of Owls, both of which are among my favourite erotic tales, so I had high hopes for what was to follow. But this story exceeded my expectations. What we have here is more than a simple erotic horror tale. We see romance themes and a proper, full-on action thriller plot. To say that the thriller aspects take centre-stage would be to risk giving the impression that this is not as erotic as McKinley's previous works. That impression would be wrong; though the major steamy action occurs for only part of the book, it is as steamy as any of McKinley's best, and there is erotic tension throughout the remainder. What we have then, is an erotic tale woven deftly into a properly thrilling action plot. In David we have a wonderfully vulnerable and open-hearted ghost hunter, with an unconventional side-kick. In Isabel we have a wonderfully dangerous and unpredictable action hero. They work well together and I very much hope we see more of these two characters. If this is an indication of the author spreading their creative wings into new territory, I'm all for it. They show here they can write romance and thriller plots as well as they write erotica, which is to say very well indeed. Cemetery Girl meets Season of Owls meets romance meets thriller. Proof you can cross the streams. More please.
  • Behind the Blindfold on Dec. 14, 2021

This follow-up to "Elevator Pitch" and "Blue Book Diaries" picks up with characters McKinley has shown us before, in a way that is at the same time familiar and a suprising departure. Without giving too much away, the story twists in a way I did not expect, showing a new side of this author's writing and giving a conclusion to the Crimes of Passion sequence of stories which is very satisfying on more than one level. It's all written with Mckinley's assured and descriptive touch and a wonderful sense of suspense and pace. Highly recommended.
  • Crimes of Passion: Volume 2 (Bundle) on Dec. 14, 2021

Different stories, different settings, but all with the same wonderful writing style that dives deep inside the heads of the various protagonists and allows us to see through their eyes, feel their emotions. "Beneath the Covered Bridge" and "The Boys Next Door" are both quite straightforward, but each has its own lovely little devices and motifs, while "Lune de Miel" - a period drama played out within the walls of a hotel room - would be my favourite here, if it weren't for the bonus story - "Volatile Memory" - which uses its cyberpunk setting to its fullest effect in creating a story which is as twisty as it is erotic. Brilliant.
  • Dreadful Desires: Volume 3 (Bundle) on Feb. 12, 2022

A collection of some of the best of Celia McKinley's stories, by turns scarily supernatural, perilous and unnerving, with twists and turns that shock, surprise and delight. To those common ingredients, Cemetery Girl weaves in a strand of almost mournful longing, The Hungry Forest adds a surprisingly life-affirming twist, and Ghost Country a thrilling action adventure. And as for Under The Bed, that's oh so spidery... Any one of these stories on its own would be worth the price of admission, every one of them is wound tight with erotic tension, to pick a favourite would be impossible. With this collection, you don't have to choose, you can take all four. Highly recommended.
  • Crimes of Passion: Volume 3 (Bundle) on March 03, 2022

A collection threaded through with ambiguity and the unexpected twist. Blue Book Diaries tells of a tabletop gaming session that takes an unexpected direction. Brute Brute Heart is a dark character study that's not an easy, throwaway read but a tale of hate and redemption satisfying in its intriguing conclusion. Behind the Blindfold is a wonderfully-paced tale of erotic domination with an unexpected twist, and would be my favourite here were it not for the bonus story - The Midnight Clear - which takes a returning character and turns her previous appearance on its head in a way which is supremely well done. As ever, these stories are written with the same care and eye for swift detail that characterises the author's work. Recommended.
  • The Praetorians Own: Abandoned on March 22, 2022

A great sci-fi tale. The world-building feels well-realised without being over-bearing, the military detail especially having a realistic feel. The whole story rocks along, the suspense building to a satisfying conclusion. Highly recommended!
  • Boar King: Noncon, Virgin, Monster Erotica on March 24, 2022

You'll know from the title and blurb what sort of story this is, and whether the subject will interest you, so - assuming it does - i'll simply say this is a beautifully-written little tale. There's a wonderful turn of phrase here, a neat eye for detail, and the reader really sees clearly into the protagonist's emotional and physical journey. At the time of writing this review, the author is quite new to publishing here on Smashwords; they write with a maturity and style that belies that newness, and I very much look forward to reading more of their work.

  • Breeding Stock on April 10, 2022

This author is new to publishing erotica, but it doesn't show. They write with a confident, light, and rather wicked style. The story's fun, rewards the reader with lots of action, and the protagonist's emotional journey is well-described. I particularly enjoyed the ending. This is the first story I have read by this new author. It won't be the last - I've already bought several more of their books. Recommended.
  • Eternal Autumn on April 26, 2022

This story has been a little while coming, and the wait has been more than amply rewarded. A story somewhat longer than Celia McKinley's usual fare, the author has used the extra space to tell a tale of considerable narrative heft. It is told with rare skill, too. It is a story that rockets along without ever feeling rushed, it has room for the characters to breathe without ever dragging, and the prose is as poetic and precise as you could ever wish. The cast of characters is intriguing and, like the very best artists, the author is able to draw a world of depth in a few carefully measured strokes. While steeped in spiritual and religious iconography, this is skilfully used to add to that depth, and never detracts from the flow. It is cerebral, without ever falling into the trap of some "clever" works of being smug or condescending. And the erotic scenes are beautiful without losing their intimacy, hot without being crude. This tale is uplifting, suspenseful, exciting, tense, erotic. and I LOVED the ending. More of this sort of thing, please.
  • Ama and the Octopus on May 07, 2022

When orphan diver Kiku steals a precious pearl, inviting the wrath of its guardians, she is obliged to strike bargains she might never have imagined, but in meeting her fate she may turn events to her advantage once more. What a wonderful story this is, a beautiful pearl in its own right. Tentacles and forbidden lusts abound, as beautifully-described as any of Celia McKinley's tales, all overlaid over a fable that is poetic, uplifting, even a little wistful. Kiku's life is changed by her choices, by the bargains she makes, but she is no victim, no simple vessel for tentacled lust. She is a character of agency and intelligence. And the underlying thread of the story - the nature of the bargain she drives her captors towards - is both wonderfully cunning and cunningly wonderful. I simply love this story, and I recommend it highly, both to afficionados of tentacle erotica and to people who enjoy a poetic erotic fable told really really well.
  • The Midnight Wind on June 18, 2022

"Breathe me in" Part action thriller, part psychological horror, part supernatural erotica, all brilliant. It's hard to go into too much detail about what I love about this story without spoilers, but as a tale of a mismatched pair of supernatural hunters on the trail of a dangerous foe, this tale is perfectly-paced, full of twists and turns that both surprise and delight, and gives a sense of genuine peril for the characters all the way to a thrilling climax. The eventual denouement is as perfectly-framed as it is neatly-described, and the erotic scenes are as steamy as they are perilous. The prose is never gory, never over-explicit, demonstrating it is possible to write a story both terrifying and erotic without ever dipping into coarse or over-gratuitous framing, and there are some beautiful turns of phrase that lift even moments that in another writer's hands would be prosaic well above their straightforward underpinnings. I think this may be the best demonstration of how to write an erotic horror-thriller I have read in a very long time. Highly highly recommended.
  • Heavenly Days on Aug. 30, 2022

The Fallen Sky saga continues, with twists and turns aplenty as the characters find themselves out of place and out of their rightful time. The tension is building in this series, to a conclusion I can't wait to read, and the journey is as well-written and as passion-filled as I could expect from one of the very best erotic thriller writers in the business. Without getting all spoiler-y, there's a moment of genuine poignancy here, all the more hard-hitting for being gently underplayed. This underscores how well the writer takes us under the skin of these characters, draws them so clearly that we care deeply about what happens to them, makes them so dear to us that we don't need hyperbolae to make their emotional moments count. And the cliffhanger at the end... oh! Highly recommended.
  • Honey's Hot Confessions. 1: The Family Friend. on Aug. 30, 2022

I really enjoyed this story - a naughty tale of confessional trouble and confounded desire, uncomplicated yet with a depth of storytelling skill that sets it apart. That the plot is straightforward really doesn't matter when a story is this well-written. It goes precisely where you're hoping it will and the journey is such wicked fun along the way. I like the whole vibe of the naughty confessional very much, and it's used here to very good effect. I'm delighted to see there are more stories in this series - Honey is a character clearly heading for more trouble, and from this confident opener what an exciting ride that's shaping up to be.
  • The Faded Sky on Nov. 01, 2022

This apocalyptic sequence of stories nears its shattering conclusion, with an encounter between adversaries worthy of all that has gone before, a fateful battle of wills between Heaven and Earth, both sides knowing it will be an end as well as a new beginning, whose effects will ripple across creation. And yet still they pit themselves one against the other... The prose is magical, poetic as ever, the action perfectly-paced, the suspense and the characterisations a masterclass in how to draw the reader into a fantastical world and invest them so deeply in it that the place feels utterly real, the characters three dimensional while being drawn in sparse, careful strokes. And the first half of this story features perhaps the most erotic tentacle tryst I think I've ever read, at least until I read the second half. The latest episode in a delightful series of stories which I will certainly be re-reading.
  • Babylon Is Falling on Feb. 10, 2023

So the Fallen Sky series reaches its climax. And what a climax. We've come a long way since 2021's Spirit of Desolation opened this series of stories, and on the way we've seen the tension build, the narrative unfold piece by piece, twist after twist, until in this final part Heaven and Earth stand ready to war with each other until Earth is a smoking ruin and until the very fabric of reality itself is torn asunder. Or something like that. It's really not easy to write large-scale set-piece battles, but here it's done with such confidence and panoramic sense of awe that the reader is just swept along with it. And it's just so well-thought through. Yes, we've got world-eating monsters, but we've also got a plausible means to defeat them. It's fantastic to see fantasy written with such care and attention. While the descriptions are evocative, they're not overbearing. While the scale of the unfolding story is immense, it's also a very imtimate and human one. While it has a spiritual thread running through it, it's not weighed down by tendentious religion. While it's an action adventure par excellence, it's also so erotically charged it crackles. I really can't recommend this highly enough. The whole series is now available in one volume - The Fallen Sky - and I will definitely be reading this again.
  • Spirit of Desolation on Feb. 10, 2023

  • Dreadful Desires: The Fallen Sky on Feb. 10, 2023

Together in one collection, the five stories that make up this apocalyptic arc. I loved reading this tale, the poetic narrative, the intimate, personal erotic scenes all the more intimate for their world-spanning backdrop, the action and peril so beautifully described. I initially read the five stories on their separate release, so I'm going to quote below from my original reviews. But in summary: if you like sweeping fantasy adventure with clever, suspenseful plot, wonderfully-described characters with mixed motives and raw passions, and a scale that manages to both be panoramically broad and achingly deep, this collection is for you. • Taken by the Lost Tribe on Sep. 06, 2023

I really enjoyed this story - very well-written and well-paced, with a lovely turn of phrase. The author cleverly manages to conjure a situation of some peril, but not too much, just enough to give a frisson of danger and uncertainty as to where it would end. A salutary lesson in always making sure you know your way back to camp... Highly recommended.
  • Big Things on Nov. 20, 2023

Nixie Fairfax knows how to write a cryptid story. If you're into your monsters, and the main character in this story certainly is, then do pick up this book.
  • A Librarian's Lust on Dec. 10, 2023

A short and steamy story of an innocent person's journey to the lustful side, well-written with a great turn of phrase.
  • Carnal Temptation on Dec. 10, 2023

I've read several stories by this author and I think this is one of my favourites. The main character has a crisis of confidence in her chosen career path, decides to test her resolve, and stumbles across her answer in an anonymous gas station bathroom. As you do. The story wouldn't work in less-skilled hands, but Bruhl knows how to convey that sense of self-doubt turning to surprised excitement. The resulting breathless ascent to pleasure is highly recommended.
  • Double Stuffed by the Ettin on Dec. 10, 2023

One of the more light-hearted romps in Fairfax's oeuvre, well-paced, with all the action you'd expect. The world described here hints at the possibility of more adventures and perils for any character fortunate or unfortunate enough to find herself enmired in its grasp. I hope we return here for more exploration soon.
  • Ana in the New World Pt. One on Jan. 25, 2024

Well-written story, short and hot with a neat turn of phrase. I'll definitely be buying part two.
  • Inseminating the Babysitter on Jan. 26, 2024

    Short, hot, Bruhl never disappoints.
  • Wicked Erotica on Jan. 26, 2024

I think I've seen most of these stories separately elsewhere, but it's good to see them collected together, and a particular delight to reacquaint myself with some of the best stories by this author. A particular gem is Get Thee Behind Me, which is by some margin my favourite of all Bruhl's work. A dark tale, pivoting snake-like on the twist; there's some lovely phrasing here, wonderful pacing and I love how the ending leaves both us and the protagonist. I would love to see more stories like this, and if you like your erotic fiction a little more on the dark and twisty side I highly recommend you pick up this collection.
