Smashwords Interview

When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first stories while in High School. They weren't very good. After my tour in Viet Nam, I wrote the military stories; "INCIDENT IN THE CAMBODIAN JUNGLE" and "OUT OF TIME."
What was your motivation to write about Michael Fields?
I grew up in New Jersey, surrounded by the battlefields of the American Revolution. Fort Lee, Trenton, Princeton and the campaign from Long Island to Brooklyn, up the length of Manhattan, passing through the town where I lived for 30 years and down the length of new Jersey to Valley Forge. Having had some military experience, it was apparent to me that General Washington's retreat should never have succeeded. There had to be some event or intervention that allowed it.

In 1976, I read an article about a British ship, from the Revolutionary period, being discovered sunken in the East River. An idea to explain the success of General Washington's retreat germinated in my mind and the story line began. The assault down the East River grew out of a camping trip on the Delaware River in 1978. The copper mines of Barbadoes Neck, the Indian trail along Copper Ridge, the Great Falls, the Schuyler and Kingsland mansions; all these places were in my back yard and cried out to have their story told.

Research gave me the social and economic background I needed to weave the events together. My brother Paul's research at Lenapihoking gave me the Indian aspect and several delightful vacations to Caribbean Islands provided the history and the setting of the great navel battles that took place there.
