Penelope M. Fernandez

Penelope M. Fernandez was born and raised in the sanctuary of the beautiful foothills of the Himalayas in a quaint town called Darjeeling, famous for its tea. She spent her childhood listening and learning from the sights and sounds of nature. Her favorite activity was watching the fireflies dance, while she contemplated over the deeper questions of life. As she grew older, Penelope developed a passion for words and melodies, and she started writing bits of verse. Before long clear unpolluted skies turned into concrete landscapes as she went to the city of Pune to do her Masters in Communication Studies. After working as a Business Editor for some years she decided to leave behind the security of a 9-5 job to become a writer. When she's not writing on her next novel she likes to channel her creativity into the production of music and writing blog posts.

"Nothing in the material sphere is sanctioned exclusion from the bonds of interconnection, not even art. Thus the conjecture that art as much one would like to believe is crafted for the sake of itself is not quite true. Instead the purpose of art is the psychological metamorphosis of the observer. And what is literature but a form of art which strings words into coherent sentences holding the potential to transform lives. It is undeniable that the hull of literature is entertainment but it must never be forgotten that the soul of literature is education."

"Our world is in desperate need of a renaissance but not of art nor science nor politics, we are in need of a mental renaissance. Hypnagogic Shifters is a duology; the first book is called Hypnagogic Shifters: Superposition, and the second one is called Hypnagogic Shifters: Entanglement. The books are part of an attempt at assisting the process of evolution and recalibration of the human mind."

Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the Himalayas. I spent a majority of my life hopping under the fir trees, and planting bits of green. I have always loved nature, most of my evenings were spent either listening to the blackbird sing, or watching the dance of the fireflies, or staring at the clear unpolluted skies. The people in the hills, in comparison to the one's living in the cities are not as tainted, perhaps this is because nature soothes the soul. Connecting with the earth is essential for mental balance. The concrete landscapes of the cities have disconnected people from their source of healing energy. I think, I became who I am because I spent hours listening and learning from the organic world. If you care to listen to her, she will whisper many secrets to you.
When did you first start writing?
Words and melodies have always been my thing. I love them both. I started writing poetry when I was about seven, it was not the finest of poetry, I continued dabbling and I always told people that I would write a book someday. Secretly, when I looked at books, I would think, 'that's too much work,' and I would look in the other direction when it came to actualizing my intention. But the idea never died and so about a year and half ago, I plunged into the deeper side of the prose-pool. And after that long painful swim, I am now crawling out of the waters with a book in my hand.
