What are you working on next?
I am working on a full length novel entitled "Asylum For The Dead". It's a bit of a post-apocalyptic steam punk fantasy. At some unspecified point in the future, humans revive a city they had long ago abandoned after climate change covered it in water. They come because a new power source has been discovered beneath the ruins of the old city. Their world is a damaged place, but this new city, built on the ruins of the old, is a pillar of civilization. Its inhabitants build a wall between them in the rest of the world, allowing only energy to exit and goods and low wage labor to enter. The most important people are those who work at the power plant, called pit devils because they work deep underground. The book opens when an assassin kills one of the pit devils. The crime is investigated by Oswald Amsel, an accountant who can read minds. Along the way he comes into contact with Nyomi, a historian paid by the city to make up lies about its past. They discover a secret war between political factions within the city, some new revelations about why it was separated from the mainland, and the terrifying truth about the power source that makes their lives possible.
In other news, I am also working on the second part to The Dead Reckoner. More on that later!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Sometimes I find it amazing I have time to write at all! I was a single parent for a long time, raising a little girl entirely on my own. I've since added a wife and step daughter. That makes life pretty busy. I have a day job, of course. I work as a software engineer on radar systems.
